(Li Dongyuan) uses Dangguiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Caudex), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), along with Taoren (Semen Persicae), Huomaren (Fructus Cannabis), and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei). (Dangguiwei, Qianghuo, and Dahuang each 5 qian; Taoren and Huomaren each 1 liang; processed into honey pills. Dangguiwei and Taoren moisten dryness and invigorate blood; Qianghuo disperses fire and searches for wind; Dahuang breaks stagnation and opens the orifices; Huomaren moistens the intestines and benefits the orifices.) Alternatively, add Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Zaojiaozizi (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis Carbonized). (For wind-dampness, add Qinjiao, Fangfeng, and Zaojiaozizi carbonized to retain its nature and ground. Zaojiaozizi becomes slippery when wet and is good at relieving constipation; Qinjiao and Fangfeng treat wind.) It effectively treats intestinal obstruction caused by wind-constipation (Fengmi) and blood-constipation (Xuemi). (Treats large bowel obstruction caused by wind-dryness and blood-dryness.)
(In Li Dongyuan's formula) Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae) are present, along with Taoren (Semen Persicae), Honghua (Flos Carthami), Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Root), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) to nourish and moisten. Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) raises the clear yang to descend the turbid yin. (When clear yang does not rise, turbid yin does not descend, leading to fecal impaction. Shengdi and Shudi each 5 fen; Taoren (ground), Honghua, Dangguishen, Gancao (honey-fried), and Shengma each 1 qian.) This formula is needed for dysphagia and fecal impaction. If Huomaren and Dahuang are added, the formula is named Danggui Runchang Tang (Angelica Intestine-Moistening Decoction). (All the above herbs have the effect of moistening dryness and unblocking the intestines.)
(In the pill formula) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) is steamed, and Yuliren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae Laevigatum), Huomaren (Fructus Cannabis), and Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) are added. Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Binglang (Arecae Semen), and Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) are included, along with Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), and Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni). For wind-constipation and qi-constipation caused by stroke (Zhongfeng), as well as intestinal wind bleeding (Changfeng Xiexue), this formula is reliable. (Dahuang (steamed and dried nine times) 5 liang; Huomaren, Yuliren (skin removed), Shanyao (wine-steamed), Cheqianzi, Niuxi (wine-steamed), Shanzhuyu 3 liang; Tusizi (wine-soaked), Fangfeng, Duhuo, Binglang, Zhike (bran-fried) each 1 liang; processed into honey pills. Fangfeng and Duhuo moisten the kidney and search for wind; Binglang and Zhike regulate qi and break stagnation; Dahuang, after steaming and drying, has a milder property. Together with the two seeds, it provides slipperiness, moistens dryness, and opens the orifices. Niuxi and Cheqianzi direct downward and promote urination; adding Shanyao, Shanzhuyu, and Tusizi consolidates the root and benefits yang, preventing excessive attacking and dispersing.)
(Zhu Danxi's formula) contains Huafen (Radix Platycodi) and Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), ground with Ouji (Succus Nelumbinis Nuciferae Raw), Shengdizhi (Succus Radicis Rehmanniae), and Niurou (Carnis Bovis). (Huafen and Lian are ground into powder, mixed with various juices.) Alternatively, add Jiangzhi (Succus Zingiberis Recens) and Fengmi (Mel) to make a paste for administration, to purge fire, generate fluids, benefit blood, and cure. (Lian purges heart fire; Shengdi nourishes kidney water; Ouji benefits the stomach; Huafen generates fluids; Niurou moistens dryness and benefits blood.)
