(Scattered powder, Luo Qianfu's formula) Treats wind-lao (chronic wasting syndrome due to wind pathogen). The herbs used are Gudupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), and Qinghao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae). Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), and Wumei (Fructus Mume) are combined to stop coughing, eliminate bone-steaming fever, and astringe sweat. (Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis), Gudupi, and Chaihu each 1 liang; Qinghao 5 qian; Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Danggui, and Zhimu each 5 qian; Wumei 5 qian. The efficacy is similar to the previous formula; if sweating is excessive, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) should be doubled. This formula adds Qinghao and Wumei, both serving the purpose of astringing sweat and reducing bone-steaming heat.)
(Decoction, *Zhizhi Fang*) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) are accompanied by Gudupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Ziwan (Radix Asteris). Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), and Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata cum Melle) are also included. Taking this for lung-lao (pulmonary consumption) with bone-steaming and coughing yields harmonious results. (Treats feiwei (lung atrophy) with bone-steaming, lao sou (consumptive cough) with hoarseness, spontaneous sweating, and physical fatigue: Chaihu 2 qian; Qinjiao, Biejia, Gudupi, Danggui, and Renshen each 1.5 qian; Ziwan, Banxia, and Zhi Gancao each 1 qian. Decoct with Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae). Note: Huangqi Biejia San (Astragalus and Turtle Shell Powder) is likely based on this formula, removing Danggui and adding other herbs to penetrate the muscle layer and resolve heat. Chaihu, Qinjiao, and Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae) are key agents, hence frequently used in formulas for bone-steaming. Although this formula treats both exterior and interior, Chaihu serves as the Jun (Emperor) herb.)
(Haizang's formula) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) and Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) are paired with Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), and Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini). Adding Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) treats lung injury, suitable for chronic hemoptysis, expectoration, and heat from consumption. (Treats extreme qi deficiency due to lung injury, consumptive heat with coughing, expectoration, and hemoptysis, feiwei (lung atrophy), and feiyong (lung abscess): Ziwan, Zhimu, Beimu, and Ejiao each 2 qian; Renshen, Fuling, Gancao, and Jiegeng each 0.5 qian; Wuweizi 12 grains. Another version adds Lianrou (Endocarpus Nelumbinis). The strategy uses Ejiao and Wuweizi as Jun (Emperor) herbs to protect the lungs and stop coughing; Zhimu and Beimu as Chen (Minister) herbs to clear fire and transform phlegm; Renshen, Fuling, and Gancao as Zuo (Assistant) herbs to strengthen Spleen earth to generate Lung metal; and Jiegeng as Shi (Envoy) herb to ascend and benefit the diaphragm. "Ji ji" (extreme qi deficiency) is one of the Six Extremes.)
(Decoction, Zhao Jie'an's formula) Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) are stored together. Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) are matched to treat asthma, cough, hemoptysis, and lung injury. (Shengdi 2 qian, Shudi 3 qian, Maidong 1.5 qian; Beimu, Baihe (Bulbus Lilii), Danggui, Baishao, and Gancao each 1 qian; Xuan Shen and Jiegeng each 0.8 qian. Excessive fire injures Lung metal, so Xuan Shen, Shengdi, and Shudi are used to assist the Kidney in nourishing water. Maidong and Baihe protect the lungs and calm the spirit; Baishao and Danggui soothe the Liver and nourish blood; Gancao, Jiegeng, and Beimu clear Lung metal and transform phlegm. Gancao is used to drain fire and cultivate the root, avoiding the use of bitter-cold herbs that would damage the vitalizing qi.)
