(Zhang Zhongjing's) Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction): Contains Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). Additionally, Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Jingsmi (Rice) are added. It is indicated for summerheat causing restlessness, thirst, and a deficient pulse. [Dosage: Shigao 1 jin, Ren Shen 3 liang, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) 3 liang, Maidong 1 sheng, Banxia and Jingsmi each 0.5 sheng, decocted with Shengjiang. Indications: Vomiting, thirst, and shortness of breath after the resolution of Shanghan (Cold Damage). The acrid-cold nature of Zhuye and Shigao disperses residual heat; the sweet-neutral nature of Ren Shen, Gancao, Jingsmi, and Maidong tonifies deficiency and generates fluids; the acrid-warm nature of Shengjiang and Banxia resolves phlegm and stops vomiting.]
(Li Dongyuan's) Shengyang Sanhuo Tang (Ascending Yang and Dispersing Fire Decoction): Contains Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), along with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Root), and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Additionally, Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root) and Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) are added, along with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube Fruit). It is excellent for treating fire stagnation in the Yang meridians by employing the method of "dispersing fire stagnation." [Dosage: Chaihu 8 qian, Gegen, Shengma, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Baishao each 5 qian, Fangfeng 2.5 qian, Zhi Gancao 3 qian, Sheng Gancao 2 qian. Take 5 qian per dose, decocted with Shengjiang and Dazao. Fire attacks often occur in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians because Wood excess generates Fire, and both meridians harbor Ministerial Fire. Therefore, Chaihu is used as the sovereign herb to disperse Liver Qi; Qianghuo and Fangfeng disperse Fire in the Taiyang meridian; Shengma and Gegen disperse Fire in the Yangming meridian; Duhuo disperses Fire in the Shaoyin meridian. Adding Renshen and Gancao tonifies Earth to drain Fire; adding Baishao drains Liver and benefits Spleen, ensuring that dispersion includes tonification and release includes restraint.]
(Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang's) Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder): contains Mangxiao (Mirabilite), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Decocted with Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) and Honey, it treats heat in the upper diaphragm (Leaves grow on bamboo, thus treating the Upper Jiao); it also eliminates dryness and excess in the Middle Jiao. [Dosage: Lianqiao 4 liang, Jiushui Dahuang (Wine-steeped Rhubarb), Mangxiao, Gancao each 2 liang, Chaohhei Zhizi (Charred Gardenia), Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellaria), Bohe each 1 liang. Grind into powder, take 3 qian per dose, decocted with Zhuye and raw honey. Lianqiao, Bohe, and Zhuye ascend and disperse upward; Zhizi, Huangqin, Mangxiao, and Dahuang descend and purge downward, allowing qi to rise and fall, thereby clearing the diaphragm. Adding Gancao and raw honey is because the pathology is in the diaphragm, and sweet flavors soothe and moderate.]
