(Li Dongyuan) Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) combined with Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber). Adding Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Gancao (Licorice Root), it can both induce sweating and tonify deficiency; those with deficiency constitution who contract external pathogens will recover after taking it. [Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Baishao (White Peony Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) each 1 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) each 3 fen, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 5 fen, Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) 5 grains. Li Dongyuan treated a patient with internal deficiency heat and severe external cold contraction leading to hemoptysis. Following Zhang Zhongjing's Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), he added tonifying agents to formulate this prescription. One dose resulted in a cure. The original explanation states: Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) disperses external cold, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) tonifies exterior deficiency, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) consolidates the exterior and benefits Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), Renshen (Ginseng Root) supplements Qi and secures the exterior, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) protect Lung Qi, Gancao (Licorice Root) tonifies Spleen, Baishao (White Peony Root) calms the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) harmonizes and nourishes Blood.]
(Weisheng Jiabao) Use Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Congbai (Scallion White), and Danshi (Fermented Soybean) together. [Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica) 1 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root) 5 qian, Danshi (Fermented Soybean) 50 grains, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) 3 slices, Congbai (Scallion White) 3 cun, decocted and taken orally to induce sweating.] It can be taken for all types of Wind-Cold pathogens; its efficacy in releasing the exterior and dispelling evil can be inferred. [Sweating must occur for the medication to be effective.] With one sheng of Danshi (Fermented Soybean), it is named Congchi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction). Its function in replacing Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is no less impressive. When Shanghan (Cold Damage) initially presents with headache and fever...
(Zhang Zhongjing) Use Mangxiao (Mirabilite), along with Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), and Houpo (Magnolia Bark). [Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) 4 liang (washed with wine), Mangxiao (Mirabilite) 3 he, Houpo (Magnolia Bark) 8 liang, Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) 5 pieces.] It excels at preserving Yin fluids and purging heat; there are several guidelines for urgent purgation of the Yangming (Yang Brightness) syndrome. [Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) treats major excess conditions, Mangxiao (Mirabilite) treats major dryness and hardness; these two treat formless blood-level pathologies. Houpo (Magnolia Bark) treats major fullness, Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) treats epigastric stuffiness; these two treat formed qi-level pathologies. When heat-toxin transmits into the Yangming Stomach Fu-organ, signs of Epigastric Stuffiness (Pi), Fullness (Man), Dryness (Zao), Excess (Shi), and Hardness (Jian) all appear. Miscellaneous diseases and excess heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) also require purgation with this method. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and Earth is the mother of all things. Diseases in the four peripheries can all transmit to the Stomach Fu-organ, after which they no longer transmit to other meridians. Tao Jie'an stated: When Shanghan (Cold Damage) heat-pathogen transmits inward, one must observe the depth of heat to prescribe medication. Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) is the most urgent, Xiaochengqi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction) is secondary, Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Order the Qi Decoction)...]
