(Zhang Zhongjing) The two methods of releasing the exterior and warming the meridians are clearly demonstrated. (Ephedrae Herba [Mahuang, 麻黄] and Asari Radix [Xixin, 细辛], each two liang; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata [Fuzi, 附子], one piece, prepared. Ephedrae Herba induces sweating to release the Taiyang meridian; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata warms and unblocks the Shaoyin meridian; Asari Radix is a drug for the exterior syndrome of the Kidney meridian, linking the two.) If the interior and exterior are not treated simultaneously, how can recovery be achieved when the Shaoyin condition presents with contrary fever? (Shaoyin syndrome: the pulse is deep, indicating an interior condition, which should present without fever. The current presence of fever indicates that the exterior syndrome of the Taiyin meridian has not yet been resolved.)
(Renshen Baidu San, from *Huoren Shu*. "Du" refers to heat-dampness.) The formula contains Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma [Renshen, 人参], Poria [Fuling, 茯苓], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Gancao, 甘草], Aurantii Fructus Immaturus [Zhike, 枳壳], Platycodonis Radix [Jiegeng, 桔梗], Bupleuri Radix [Chaihu, 柴胡], Peucedani Radix [Qianhu, 前胡], Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix [Qianghuo, 羌活], Angelicae Pubescentis Radix [Duhuo, 独活], and Chuanxiong Rhizoma [Chuanxiong, 川芎]. Add a small amount of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba [Bohe, 薄荷] and three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens [Shengjiang, 生姜]; it has miraculous efficacy in treating epidemic colds. (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Poria, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Platycodonis Radix, Bupleuri Radix, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, and Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each one liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma five qian. Take two liang per dose, decoct with Menthae Haplocalycis Herba and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens. Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix regulates wandering wind of the Taiyang meridian; Angelicae Pubescentis Radix regulates hidden wind of the Shaoyin meridian, and also dispels dampness and relieves pain; Chuanxiong Rhizoma and Bupleuri Radix harmonize blood and ascend clear yang; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus and Peucedani Radix move qi, transform phlegm, and descend rebellious qi; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Platycodonis Radix, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, and Poria clear the lungs and strengthen the stomach, supporting healthy qi and rectifying pathogenic factors. Yu Jiayan stated: Among the gates of summerheat, dampness, and heat, this formula is recommended as the first. Unskilled physicians omit Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma; does it differ from other formulas?) Removing Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma yields Baidu San; adding Xiaofeng San yields the same therapeutic effect. (Combined name: Xiaofeng Baidu San.)
(Tao Jie'an) Uses Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Membranacei Radix [Huangqi, 黄芪], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Ramulus [Guizhi, 桂枝], Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix [Fangfeng, 防风], Chuanxiong Rhizoma, and Paeoniae Radix Alba [Baishao, 白芍]. Add Asari Radix and Ziziphus Jujuba [Dazao, 大枣], decoct with baked Zingiberis Rhizoma [Weijiang, 煨姜]; the method for yang deficiency with no sweat should be well understood. (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Membranacei Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Paeoniae Radix Alba stir-fried with wine, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Cinnamomi Ramulus, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Asari Radix roasted, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Ziziphus Jujuba. Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Membranacei Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Ramulus, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata greatly tonify yang, assisting Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, and Asari Radix to disperse cold and release the exterior. Paeoniae Radix Alba is added to consolidate yin within yang, achieving dispersion with retention. Tao Jie'an stated: Fever, headache, aversion to cold, and absence of sweat, where sweating agents fail to induce sweat, is due to yang deficiency failing to generate sweat, termed the "no-sweat syndrome." Unskilled physicians fail to recognize this, regardless of season, using heavy doses of Ephedrae Herba to forcibly extract sweat, causing many deaths. He further stated: People know only that Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Astragali Membranacei Radix stop sweating, but do not know they can also induce sweating, because within a group of exterior-releasing drugs, they assist those drugs in dispersing pathogens.)
