For the treatment of wind-cold (Shangfeng), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) is used as the sovereign drug, with Gancao (Licorice Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) as ministering drugs. The classics state: "Pungent and sweet flavors disperse and belong to Yang." Wind pathogens are suitable for pungent dispersion; since Fangfeng has a pungent flavor and is a general remedy for wind diseases, it serves as the sovereign drug, while Gancao and Baizhu serve as ministering drugs.
For the treatment of cold damage (Shanghan), Gancao is used as the sovereign drug, with Fangfeng and Baizhu as ministering drugs; this reflects that cold pathogens are suitable for dispersion using sweet flavors. If there are other accompanying syndromes, select from the previously mentioned syndrome-specific remedies, allocating dosages according to the principles of sovereign, minister, assistant, and envoy.
For sudden onset of redness and swelling of the eyes, Fangfeng and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) are used as sovereign drugs to clear heat and fire; Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Danggui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body) are added as ministering drugs to harmonize the blood; additionally, channel-specific guiding drugs are employed.
For chronic eye conditions resulting in dim vision, Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) and Danggui Shen are used as sovereign drugs; Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Fangfeng as ministering drugs; Gancao and Ganju (Chrysanthemum Flower) as ministering drugs.
For dysentery accompanied by abdominal pain, Shaoyao (White Peony Root) and Gancao are used as sovereign drugs; Danggui and Baizhu as ministering drugs. Regarding hematochezia occurring before or after defecation, differentiation should be based on heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner).
For watery diarrhea, Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu are used as sovereign drugs, with Shaoyao and Gancao as ministering drugs.
For various wind diseases, Fangfeng is used as the sovereign drug, with ministering drugs selected according to the specific disease.
For cough, Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) is used as the sovereign drug; if phlegm is present, Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) is used as a ministering drug; if wheezing is present, Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) is used as a ministering drug; regardless of the presence or absence of heat, Huangqin is used as a ministering drug, differing only in dosage.
For difficult urination, Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) and Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) are used as sovereign drugs, with Fuling and Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) as ministering drugs.
For dampness in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), Caolongdan (Gentiana Scabra Root) and Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra Root) are used as sovereign drugs, with Gancao and Huangbai as ministering drugs.
For hemorrhoids and fistulas, Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome) and Fangfeng are used as sovereign drugs, with Gancao and Shaoyao as ministering drugs. Adjustments should be made based on detailed differentiation of other syndromes.
For various sores and ulcers, Huanglian and Danggui are used as sovereign drugs, with Gancao and Huangqin as ministering drugs.
For malaria, Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) is used as the sovereign drug; depending on the time of onset and its corresponding channel, specific guiding drugs are used as ministering drugs.
The above outlines the general principles of herbal usage. Further differentiation of other syndromes is required, making incremental adjustments to the previously mentioned syndrome-specific remedies.
