[Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf)]
Qi is neutral, flavor is pungent. Another view states it is bitter and greatly cold, with a pungent and neutral nature. Non-toxic.
*Bencao* records: It primarily treats cough with rebellious Qi, distension of tendons, acute foul sores, and kills small insects. It removes vexation and heat, wind-induced spasms, throat obstruction (Hou Bi), and vomiting. Zhongjing's Zhuye Tang uses Dan Zhuye (Light Bamboo Leaf).
*Xin* records: It removes vexation and heat, relaxes the skin, and benefits Qi.
*Zhen* records: It contains slight Yang within Yin, cooling the Heart Meridian.
[Cha / Ming (Tea)]
Qi is slightly cold, flavor is bitter.
*Bencao* records: It primarily treats vomiting and hiccups, warm Qi disorders, alternating chills and fever, hematemesis, and uterine bleeding (Beng Zhong). Distension of tendons.
[Danzhu (Light Bamboo)]
Qi is cold, flavor is pungent and neutral.
*Bencao* records: It primarily treats phlegm-heat in the chest and cough with rebellious Qi.
*Yaoxing Lun* records: Dan Zhuye primarily treats hematemesis, wind caused by heat-toxin, suppresses toxicity from Danshi (mineral) drugs, and stops thirst.
*Ri Hua Zi* records: Dan Zhu and its roots eliminate phlegm, treat manic restlessness due to heat, aphasia due to stroke, high fever and headache, head wind, as well as dizziness and falling in pregnant women, stop palpitations and fright, treat plague-related confusion and oppression, and infantile convulsions and opisthotonos. The stems and leaves are used together. Seen in *Jufang Bencao*. It is recorded here for reference.
[Lacha / Ming (Winter Tea / Tea)]
Qi is slightly cold, flavor is bitter and sweet. Non-toxic.
Enters the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians.
*Ye* records: This refers to Lacha. It clears the head and eyes, promotes urination, eliminates heat-thirst, directs Qi downward, aids digestion, and reduces sleepiness. It is suitable for stroke with coma or excessive sleepiness. Enters the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians. Ming (bitter tea), flavor is bitter and sweet, slightly cold. Non-toxic. It primarily treats sores, promotes urination, removes phlegm-heat and thirst. When used in decoctions for Yin-patterns, it helps overcome rejection of cold medicines. It also treats hidden Yang. The general idea is similar. Tea is bitter; the Classics state: "Bitter drains." Its nature moves downward, so how can it be said to clear the head and eyes?
[Qinpi (Ash Bark)]
Qi is cold, flavor is bitter. Non-toxic.
*Ye* records: It primarily treats dysentery with tenesmus and deficiency of the Lower Jiao. The Classics state: "Bitterness consolidates." Therefore, Baitouweng, Huangbai, and Qinpi are used; these are bitter agents. They treat bi-syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, green cataracts and white membranes on the eyes, low sperm count in men, leukorrhea in women, and infantile convulsions. It is suitable for making a decoction to wash the eyes. Commonly known as Bai Mu. Take the bark, soak it in water until it yields a blue-green color. Using it together with Zicao (Arnebia Root) enhances the visual effect significantly. Daji is its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Wuzhuyu.
