When lochia (postpartum discharge of blood and mucus) does not come, it is due to Blood Stasis; Wuji Wan is indicated. When lochia remains patent, it is due to Phlegm Confounding the Mind; Liushen Tang is indicated: Banxia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Tuber with Fermented Wheat) 1 qian, Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) 1 qian, Dansheng (Arisaema Cum Bile) 1 qian, Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) 1 qian, Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) 1 qian, Xuanfuhua (Flores Inulae) 1 qian. Shen Yaofeng said: A female tailor, more than half a month postpartum, went mad and beat and cursed incessantly. Her husband locked her on a millstone. I prescribed Wuji Wan, 6 qian, divided into two doses, taken with wine. After finishing the dose, she recovered immediately. Four or five days later, it recurred. I gave another 6 qian, and it did not recur again.
Yaofeng also said: A woman surnamed Ding suffered from postpartum coma and delirious speech resembling madness. Her lochia was still patent, though not excessive. Physicians debated whether to use purgatives or tonics. Senior practitioner Jin Shangtao arrived later. After diagnosis, he said, "Let me try a mild prescription to see." He used Dujuhong, Shichangpu, and four other herbs. After one dose, her spirit cleared; after four doses, she recovered completely. This prescription must have been frequently effective, so in this critical condition, he did not hesitate or show off. I told my younger brother Gengyu about it. He replied, "This is called Liushen Tang." I did not research its origin.
Yaofeng also said: In early spring of the Jiaxu year, Mrs. Qian Xiangshu suffered from slight fever and chest/epigastric stuffiness, with occasional delirious speech and continuous lochia. My blood-regulating medicines were ineffective. I changed to Liushen Tang for four doses, and the illness disappeared as if lost.
Wu Shuqing said: This is caused by Heat-Phlegm confusing the Heart.
Dansheng (1 qian), Juhong (1 qian), Banxia (1.5 qian), Shichangpu (1 qian), Yujin (1 qian).
Decoct in water, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) one tablespoon, and Shengjiangzhi (Ginger Juice) three small teaspoons. Take mixed.
Shen Yaofeng said: Coma with muteness can be either Deficiency or Excess. One must refer to accompanying symptoms and pulse.
This belongs to Kidney Deficiency. In tonifying the Kidney, one should simultaneously employ Warming and Unblocking methods.
Yuanshengdi (Raw Rehmanniae Radix, 4 qian), Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian, stir-fried), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 0.5 qian), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix, 0.5 qian, stir-fried).
Decoct in water and take.
For critical collapse due to Deficiency, sending Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) with Heixi Dan yields only a 10-20% success rate.
Xu Aihui said: In a volume compiled by Jiang Yongchuan, it is recorded that Black Lead (Heiqian) is the essence of Water, belonging to the North (Ren-Gui/Water element). Whenever Yin Fire rebels upward, True Yang suddenly collapses, causing urgent conditions like panting and phlegmonous rattling, using it together with Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) for Yang-returning therapy produces immediate miraculous results. This is what the Classic refers to as "Heavy Dosage."
He also said: Jiang also recorded a verified prescription for treating hiccup (E Ni) by Mr. He Weidan: For hiccups caused by Cold Damage, where the sound can be heard by several households, take a few Douzi Dou (Faba Semen), roast them on a tile until carbonized but retaining efficacy, grind into powder, and mix with warm water to take 2 qian. The hiccups stop immediately. Additionally, *Bencao Gangmu* states: For post-illness hiccups, roast Douzi Dou with the shell and take it. Jiang says: This prescription is suitable for adding to Xuafu Daizhe Shi Tang.
