Number of clothing items on the body. Anterior view of the head and face: (presence of hair bun) length of hair, (quantity at) vertex, fontanelle, hairline, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, (open or closed; if closed, pry open to inspect if eyes are intact), nose, (nostrils), mouth, (open or closed), teeth, tongue, (in case of hanging, check if tongue is pressed against teeth), chin, throat, chest, breasts, (mammary glands in women), heart and abdomen, umbilicus, lower abdomen, penis, scrotum, (subsequently palpate both kidneys/testicles for integrity; in women referred to as birth canal/vagina, in girls as vulva), thighs, knees, calves, ankles, dorsum of feet, fingernails.
Turn over: back of head, occiput, neck, shoulder blades, back, waist, buttocks, (presence of cane marks), anus, posterior legs, popliteal fossae, calf muscles, heels, soles of feet.
Left side: left temporal region, mastoid process, temple, ear, cheek, neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, arm, hand, fingernails, (intact or not, clenched fist or open), axilla, costal margin, lateral hip, lateral knee, [text missing], ankle.
Right side follows the same pattern.
The examiner must personally inspect corpses in all four positions (supine and lateral decubitus). The vertex, fontanelle, bilateral temporal regions, bilateral temples, sub-throat, anterior chest, bilateral breasts, bilateral costal margins, heart, abdomen, back of head, occiput, scrotum, and anus are all vital areas where fatal injuries may occur. (In women, inspect the vagina and bilateral mammary glands).
If any injury is found in a vital area or even a non-fatal area, the coroner (wuzuo) shall point it out and report it aloud.
Estimate the deceased's age, carefully observe facial features for documentation, or consult blood relatives for verification.
When examining a corpse, first burn large amounts of Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu) and Sophora Flavescens Fruit (Zaojiao), then approach the corpse. After examination, step back three to five paces, have someone sprinkle vinegar onto hot charcoal, and walk over it; the foul odor will naturally dissipate.
Prepare plenty of Scallion (Cong), Zanthoxylum Fruit (Jiaopepper), salt, and white plums (Baimai) to cover and fumigate areas where injuries might be hidden. Bring a mortar and pestle to grind these substances.
During re-examination, maintain full concentration and do not shy away from foul odors. Do not allow the coroner or assistants to conceal the penis or vagina, as this leads to significant errors. Carefully inspect inside the hair, anus, and vagina for concealed iron nails or other objects.
Only after identifying the fatal vital injury should the disputing parties and witnessing relatives be brought to view the corpse. Do not allow them to approach closely to prevent damage to the body.
Injuries must be carefully measured for length, width, depth, and size to determine the cause of death.
Coroners and assistants, upon instruction, often apply Rubia cordifolia root (Qiancao/Rui Cao) mixed with vinegar to wounds to hide traces. This can be neutralized with Licorice Root (Gancao) decoction to reveal the marks.
Human skin is naturally reddish-black; after death, it turns bluish-black, obscuring bruises. If suspicious, wet the area with water, crush fresh Scallion white parts, apply to the suspected mark, cover with paper dipped in vinegar, wait for an hour, remove, wash with water, and the mark will appear.
If there are multiple bluish-black patches on the corpse, drip water on them: if it is a bruise, the skin becomes hard and water stays; if not a bruise, the skin is soft and water flows off.
For invisible injuries on skin or bone, pour vinegar-soaked lees on the corpse; outdoors, cover the area with new oiled silk or an oil-paper umbrella, view through the umbrella towards the sun to reveal marks. In rainy weather, use hot charcoal held at a distance for illumination; this is an effective method. For more concealed injuries, mash white plums, apply to the area, and fumigate/cover again. If still not visible, take plum flesh, mix with Scallion, pepper, salt, and lees, grind into a paste, heat thoroughly on fire, and cauterize the injury site (with paper lining underneath); the injury will become visible.
Historically, two men fought, and one fell dead instantly with clear witnesses. Upon examination, no external injuries were found, puzzling the inspector. It was cold, so he devised a plan. He dug a pit over two chi deep, heated firewood appropriately, placed the corpse in the pit, and covered it with clothes. After some time, when the corpse warmed up, he removed it. Applying paper soaked in wine and vinegar revealed the fatal injuries.
After fumigation and inspection, the coroner reports the findings for the four positions, stating "Corpse supine." Starting from the head: Vertex intact, fontanelle intact, forehead intact, bilateral temporal regions intact, bilateral temples intact, eyes intact, eyebrows intact, ears intact, cheeks intact, shoulders intact, chest intact, heart intact, umbilicus intact, abdomen intact, genitals intact, (women: vagina intact, girls: vulva intact), thighs intact, waist intact, knees intact, [missing text] intact, dorsum of feet intact, fingernails intact.
