My late father, Zhongxuan Gong, obtained this prescription and found it to be miraculously effective on many occasions.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) (each two liang).
Select, wash, and dry them according to usual methods; chop Coptidis Rhizoma into one-cun pieces. Stir-fry them together in the same pan until fragrant and cooked. Divide into two parts: each part is made into pills with vinegar paste, sized like paulownia seeds. (For children, size them like mung beans.) For pure red dysentery, take Coptidis Rhizoma pills; for pure white dysentery, take Evodiae Fructus pills; for mixed red and white dysentery, take both. If red precedes white, take Coptidis Rhizoma first, then Evodiae Fructus. If red is more than white, use two parts Coptidis Rhizoma and one part Evodiae Fructus. The reverse applies similarly. Take 50-100 pills per dose, continuing until cured, washed down with aged rice water. (Generally, Evodiae Fructus treats white dysentery, while Coptidis Rhizoma treats red dysentery. Use eagle-claw shaped Coptidis Rhizoma.)
To treat red and white dysentery when other medicines are ineffective, this formula works like magic; it also treats cases accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. (The following three prescriptions are attributed to Han Ziwen.)
Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) (sliced, stir-fried until yellow), Papaveris Pericarpium (Yingsuke) (crushed, mixed with honey, stir-fried until blackish-yellow), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (chopped, stir-fried until yellow). These three ingredients are taken in equal proportions, crushed, and sieved into powder. Take six qian per dose. For red dysentery, add an extra inch of roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and decoct together. For white dysentery, add a piece of stir-fried Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) and decoct together. Decoct two large zhen of water until reduced to one and a half zhen. Drink all at once, regardless of time. Then, decoct the dregs from two doses again and drink them. There will be no case that does not heal.
For alternating chills and fever where heat predominates over cold, one dose is invariably effective. (Our family frequently prepares this to help others; one dose leads to immediate recovery.)
To treat epidemic chills and fever (Shixing Hanre) when other medicines fail. There is now a prescription transmitted in dreams by spirits. Those suffering from this illness should follow the prescription and will recover. If the pathogenic influence is deep and severe, and one dose does not cure it, the toxin will erupt once and never return.
High-quality Galangal Fruit (Gaoliangjiang) (chopped, slightly stir-fried) and high-quality Sichuan White Ginger (Chuanbaijiang) (processed, chopped). Grind these two ingredients separately into extremely fine powders. Weigh equal amounts of each, ensuring no bias, then place them in a mortar and grind uniformly. Sieve the mixture twice. For severe cases, take three large qian in total; for mild cases, take three small qian in total. On the day of onset, before sunrise, take two pig gallbladders (do not use white ones), cut them open to extract the juice, mix with the medicine evenly, add a little hot wine to blend well, swallow forcefully in one go, and follow with a little more wine. Immediately rinse the mouth and suppress the taste with sweet food. Do not take any other medicine for one day, and avoid foods that are excessively cold. (The gallbladder must be from a pig; gallbladders from male or female pigs are unsuitable. In Jiangnan, this is called "Dun Zhu".)
