A good prescription of Taohong Wan (Peach Kernel and Safflower Pill) for treating children with cough, excessive phlegm-saliva accumulation, or wheezing and urgency:
Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, prepared by stir-frying with ginger juice), Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma, prepared), Chuan Wu (Aconiti Radix, prepared, each 1 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, roasted, 2 qian), Di Long (Pheretima, 1 qian), Bai Fan (Alumen, calcined, 1 liang).
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder, kneaded with natural fresh ginger juice into pills the size of sesame seeds, coated with Cinnabar (Zhusha) to appear half-red and half-white. Take 30-50 pills per dose, administered with light ginger soup.
Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, both de-corened), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, white part), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, both washed and weighed), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix).
The above ingredients are mixed in equal parts and ground into fine powder. One stick of Jin Mo (Gold Ink) is retained for its properties. Honey is refined to make pills. Each pill is coated with a large sheet of Gold Foil (Da Jin Bo). Take one pill per dose, dissolved in mint soup.
A powder formula effective for treating all kinds of erysipelas and "Long Dai" (likely referring to specific pediatric skin eruptions or convulsions) in children (First take Xiao Du Yin internally, then apply externally):
Huang Dan (Minium, weight 1 liang), Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, weight 1 liang), Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed, select those with even ends, grind into powder, 0.5 he).
Grind the above ingredients evenly, mix with well water, and apply to the affected area using a chicken feather brush for immediate effect.
A good prescription of Xi Hui San (Rhinoceros Horn Ash Powder) for treating children with deficiency-heat in the Heart Meridian causing painful and difficult urination and unbearable pain inside the urethra:
Burn the horn until it retains its nature (charred but not turned to ash), grind into powder, add Moschus (She Xiang). Take half a qian-bi (a small measuring spoon made from a bird's beak) per dose, mixed with Deng Xin Cao Tang (Juncus effusus decoction).
Ci Shi San (Magnetite Powder) for treating children with scalds and burns:
Porcelain from Jingdezhen (any quantity).
Break the porcelain into pieces, bury them in the charcoal fire of a stove, spread on top, leave overnight, then take out and place on the ground to remove the "fire toxicity". Grind into powder, add Minium (Huang Dan), mix with water, and apply to the scalded or burned area.
Mao Gen Tang (Imperata Rhizome Decoction) for a condition occurring after children suffer from Shang Han (Cold Damage), where sudden epistaxis occurs. This condition also exists in adults over five years old and is named "Red Sweat." It is believed that if the exterior is not resolved through sweating, blood will flow; thus, allowing the nosebleed to occur allows self-resolution.
Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix), Sheng Mi (Raw Honey), Jiu (Wine/Liquor) (each 1 small cup).
Take a handful of Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizoma), crush and decoct into juice, concentrate until thick like syrup.
Decoct the above together to obtain one cup, mix well, and take warm. Drink a small amount (half a cup) at a time for immediate effect.
Treating epistaxis (nosebleed) in children caused by heat accumulation in the Heart and Lungs and reckless bleeding of Heart Blood:
Take a piece of an old rattan-paper quilt, roll it into a wick, wrap Moschus (She Xiang) inside, burn it, and smoke the fumes into the nasal cavity. Alternatively, blow the powder into the nose, or have the patient inhale and swallow it, which is especially good. Old rattan-paper quilts can be used. Alternatively, burn it until it retains its nature, store it in a small bottle. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with wine, which is extremely effective.
