To treat all syndromes in infants and young children, as well as all deficiency-type dysentery (deficiency-type diarrhea with tenesmus), where other medicines are ineffective, this medicine is extremely effective. Hu Huang Lian Wan (Huanglian Pill) Formula:
Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Ku Xing Ren, 苦杏仁 - *Note: Text says 'Hu Huang Lian', likely referring to Coptidis Rhizoma or similar bitter herb, but standard translation for 胡黄连 is Picrorhizae Rhizoma. However, context implies a complex formula. Let's stick to literal Pinyin/English for specific herbs if ambiguous, but 胡黄连 is typically Picrorhizae Rhizoma*), Picrorhizae Rhizoma (Huhuanglian, 胡黄连); Aloe (Lushui, 芦荟); Coptidis Rhizoma (Cao Huanglian, 草黄连); Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou, 肉豆蔻) (processed); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui, 桂); Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参); Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂); Moschus (She, 麝香) (1 qian weight); Quisqualis Fructus (Shijunzi, 使君子) (shelled); Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香); Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Diaoteng, 钓藤); Os Draconis (Longchi, 龙齿); Poria (Baifuling, 白茯苓) (all above each 1 liang weight).
Process each ingredient raw, grind into fine powder. Take two pig gallbladders, split them to extract juice, mix evenly with the powder. Place the mixture into a bag, tie it securely with a rope, and boil in water for half a day. Remove, cut open the bag, then add Scopoliae Fructus (Langdangzi, 莨菪子) 2 liang weight (lightly stir-fried) and Minium (Huandan, 黄丹) 1 liang weight. Grind these two ingredients separately into powder, mix with the previous medicine, and pound/beaten five hundred times. Form pills the size of mung beans. For any cases of malnutrition syndrome (Gan, 疳) and dysentery, administer with rice gruel drink, 5-7 pills per dose; for younger infants, 3 pills. If they do not take rice gruel, allow them to suckle from the nipple. This can treat twelve types of Gan-dysentery and "Wugu" (Innocent) Gan, with extraordinary efficacy.
Discussion: The disease of Gan (malnutrition syndrome) is critical and develops gradually; the relapse and retrograde transmission of dysentery stem from prolonged duration (prolonged illness is considered retrograde/negative). Initially, symptoms appear mild, so people call them ordinary; later, when the severity is realized, there is no way to save them. Therefore, both Gan and dysentery arise from accumulated toxins due to pampering and indulgence in food and drink, leading to deficiency causing further deficiency, and using harmful methods causing injury. Physicians seeing such conditions naturally feel worried and doubtful; families desire quick recovery, yet impatience leads to delayed treatment and deeper complications. Conditions may progress to extreme Gan with sticky dysentery, or excessive heat worsening thirst, irritability, and edema of the four limbs, or sudden vomiting of food. Conventional formulas cannot bring peace and healing; harsh/fast-acting agents risk damaging the harmonious Qi (He Qi, 和气). It is only suitable to take this medicine.
To treat children with various Gan-Qi (malnutrition qi) disorders, emaciation, weak constitution, mental fatigue, and lack of strength, commonly taken to kill parasites, eliminate Gan, stimulate appetite, and promote eating, Fei Ji Wan (Flesh-Thickening Pill) Formula:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (1 fen, remove stamen); Toosendan Fructus (Chuanlianzi Rou, 川楝子肉) (each 0.5 liang, stir-fried); Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (0.5 liang); Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮); Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi, 香附子) (each 1 fen, boiled in wine, stir-fried dry); Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香) (2 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Use water-boiled fine wheat flour paste as a binder to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Each dose is 30-50 pills, taken with warm rice drink.
Discussion: Jing-Gan (startled Gan), accumulation, and dysentery each have distinct syndromes requiring different medications. Now, if a child suffers from Gan-deficiency fatigue and concurrently has dysentery, the combination of these two syndromes is particularly severe. With Gan and dysentery occurring simultaneously, the Zang-Fu organs are extremely deficient, and heat-toxin is slightly heavy. All result from long-standing stagnation of accumulation. Although it is said to be due to accumulation, there is no accumulation to purge; rather, it is deficiency allowing pathogenic invasion. If one considers it deficiency and tonifies, it may be too late; observing these symptoms without a good formula leaves one without a method of treatment. Even if a good formula is obtained, without examining the syndrome, cure is difficult. This is primarily because the pulse matches the disease, and the medicine corresponds to the syndrome. The physician applies skill to support the upright Qi and restore health, surely achieving stability. Hu Huang Lian Wan is unsurpassed; Fei Ji Wan is also an excellent formula, assisting each other to overcome the disease.
