To treat infantile *Zouma Gan* (Running Horse Cancri, a rapidly progressing form of cancrum oris), where teeth are ulcerated, leading to "Bengsha" (bleeding like crumbling sand) and tooth loss, refer to the Lanxiang San formula:
Qingfen (Calomelas, 1 liang weight) Lanxiangzi (Basil Seeds, 1 liang, ground into powder) Miduoseng (Litharge, 0.5 liang, ground into powder using vinegar residue)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and apply to the teeth and gums for immediate effect.
Commentary: Infants suffer from various symptoms; *Gan* disease is largely caused by Qi stagnation in the Triple Burner. *Gan* is categorized by the five Zang organs, with the Kidney often being deficient. When this deficiency leads to *Gan*, it is called "Ji Gan" (Urgent Gan), metaphorically described as "running horse" to indicate its rapid progression and difficult treatment. In this condition, initial halitosis is called "Chou Xi"; subsequently, teeth turn black, called "Bengsha"; severe gum erosion is called "Kui Cao"; further severity with bleeding is called "Xuan Lu"; and the most severe stage with spontaneous tooth loss is called "Fu Gen". Once the root is rotted, how can it be healed? Alas! Wealthy families nourish children with sweet, rich, and fatty foods, causing internal empty heat; or due to the mother consuming delicacies during pregnancy, affecting the fetus. This is not accidental. The secret formula is presented below:
Another Formula: Chuan Chi Li Xiao San (Teeth-Smearing Immediate Effect Powder)
Yazui Danfan (Alum Stone, 1 liang weight, heated on a spoon until red, then ground) Shexiang (Musk, a small amount)
Grind uniformly. Apply a small amount to the teeth and gums each time. (Another method uses Chan Su [Toad Venom] equivalent to one character, mixed with Musk and applied).
Commentary: The circulation of blood belongs to Ying (Nutritive Qi), and the circulation of Qi belongs to Wei (Defensive Qi). After the period of Bian Zheng (transformation and steaming), deep concern exists that diet may injure Ying and Wei, causing various diseases. If Qi is injured by toxins and Blood by hot toxins, these attack deficient Zang organs. Whichever Zang is deficient, heat attaches to it. Generally, the Kidney in infants is always prone to deficiency; it must not be attacked by hot toxins, which would damage sinews and bones. Teeth receive the residual Qi of bones, so they are the first to manifest disease, named "Zouma" (Running Horse) because it does not develop slowly. Medication is appropriate. Externally, use Luyin Dihuang Gao, Huadu Dan, Xiaodu Yin, etc. For external symptoms, apply the previously mentioned Li Xiao San and She Su Gao. Strictly avoid giving food with hot-toxic properties. This type of Gan differs from common conditions; it is related to "Wugu Gan" (Innocent Gan). Physicians should investigate deeply, prioritizing the preservation of life. Using standard formulas makes cure difficult.
Good Formula for Treating Kidney Gan with Halitosis:
Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Shexiang (Musk, a small amount, finely ground and mixed in)
Each herb weighs 1 liang. Grind into powder. Take 1 tablespoon per dose; reduce to half for younger children. Mix with cooked water prepared from Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and swallow.
