Translation:
It is said that when blood fails to nourish, the spirit (Shen) is not fully prepared; when Qi fails to defend, the vessels are not filled. Regulate the use of blood, harmonize Qi to stabilize it, settle the spirit to utilize it, and adjust the vessels to balance Yin and Yang. When Qi and Blood mutually support each other, all vessels flow smoothly, and the Triple Burner (San Jiao) and Five Zang Organs naturally benefit their physical structure. For an infant who has just reached one year of age, spontaneous sweating should not occur. Spontaneous sweating indicates the loss of Yang (Wang Yang). Loss of Yang leads to timidity of Qi. Timidity of Qi leads to a deficient pulse. A deficient pulse leads to the dispersion of the spirit. Dispersion of the spirit leads to the onset of convulsive disorders (Jing Feng). Once convulsive disorders have set in, spasms and twitching manifest. If physicians fail to investigate thoroughly in such cases, the root cause lies in blood failing to nourish and Qi failing to defend. The disease will not be mild, and the harm will surely be great. Calamity arises from minute beginnings; how can human affairs neglect this? Vulgar practitioners instead laugh, saying, "How can spontaneous sweating lead to wind-phlegm epilepsy?" I say: They do not understand the underlying reasons; this is not my fault. Taking this as one example, infer other deficiency patterns by analogy. Wise individuals should reflect upon this. Observing the waves reveals the ocean; understanding the nascent signs requires clarifying the root. Practitioners versed in adaptation must examine gains and losses, ensuring that right and wrong remain within proper measures, acting with prudence and rigor before ceasing. Regarding spontaneous sweating in infants, do not forcibly stop it. The prescription uses one fen of Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and a pinch of Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus), boiled in water until dry. Remove the wheat, grind into powder, and administer mixed with Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction). Recovery is the ideal outcome. If one forcibly stops sweating, it may instead cause Qi stagnation, heat, and irritability. As stated, when Qi and Blood mutually support, sweat stops naturally.
It is said that spontaneous sweating accompanied by diarrhea occurs due to blood failing to nourish, resulting in exterior deficiency. Diarrhea without sweating occurs due to Qi failing to defend, resulting in interior deficiency. Among these, if both diarrhea and spontaneous sweating occur, it indicates deficiency of both Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) levels. In treating such patients, relying solely on tonifying blood to nourish and tonifying Qi to defend to support the body is insufficient. If blood fails to nourish and Qi fails to defend, interior and exterior do not interact, upper and lower do not ascend and descend, orifices do not open, meridians and collaterals are not regulated, Ying and Wei do not circulate, and Zang-Fu organs are not full. How can physicians be considered excellent? How can life be preserved after taking medicine? Ultimately, the failure lies in not maintaining purity and integrity from the beginning. Fortunately, diarrhea caused by the failure to distinguish food and fluids, diarrhea due to weak intestines and bowels, diarrhea due to disharmony of Zang-Fu organs, diarrhea due to conflict between cold and heat, diarrhea due to imbalance of Yin and Yang, and diarrhea due to disharmony of Ying and Wei—all aforementioned types of diarrhea—stem from Qi deficiency. When a newborn suddenly develops diarrhea, one should follow the regulation of Ying and Wei, balance Yin and Yang, moderate cold and heat, harmonize Zang-Fu organs, separate food and fluids, and generate Stomach Qi. Then, the interior and exterior will be full, and why would diarrhea occur? It is appropriate to use Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), adding Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), decocted together. Dosages should be adjusted according to deficiency and excess conditions.
