It is said that while the infant is within the womb, its form is in a state of gestation. It receives Qi sufficiently, with Water and Fire (Heart and Kidney) mutually assisting each other, ensuring the Heart and Kidney are not deficient. The sensory orifices of the eyes and ears are connected, and the Large Intestine and Small Intestine assist one another. Therefore, the voice is clear, resonant, and loud because the root is solid, the foundation is strong, and the innate constitution is full; this is the natural principle. Upon birth, if crying produces no sound, but only makes "eh-eh" sounds with a depressed demeanor, or if the voice is short and the Qi above and below does not flow smoothly, doctors and midwives may declare that this is due to insufficient fetal Qi and ask why medicine should be administered. If an adult were displeased by their parents, alas! If the root is not strong, why use medicinal herbs? It is like a withered tree; how can water be suitable? Ancient practice suggests using parental calling and scolding, or applying warm compresses with green onions (Cong Zhi), to cause the voice to emerge. Although this is a profound principle, it relies on the eyes having a foundation. Those who bear children and raise them must understand this rationale.
It is said that when Heaven and Earth are clear and bright, all things are illuminated. One Qi fills and flows through, and the Three Yuan (San Yuan) are complete. After conception and birth according to destiny, regardless of wealth or poverty, the child possesses complete Spirit, robust Qi and pulse, normal hearing and vision, enjoys playing, takes and gives freely, and expresses joy and anger naturally in interactions. To understand the child's nature and cognition, one observes their response to commands and reprimands; only then can one say they grasp the essence of the child's mental awareness. However, if after one year old the child does not recognize names, does not affectionately approach relatives, often frowns with a stern face, holds back tears, responds randomly to calls from different directions, sits like wood, lies like a corpse, stumbles when walking, and stands relying on weak sinews, bones, Qi, and pulse, showing timidity and weakness—knowing neither satiety when eating nor thirst when drinking—if they grow up to be lazy and dull, it must be due to such insufficiency of fetal Qi. Such cases are difficult to survive past a thousand days; excellent prescriptions are not designed for this. Physicians should investigate, and scholars should study deeply.
It is said that these symptoms arise from fright-wind (Jing Feng) and malignant reversal. Within three to five days after birth, there is upward staring of the eyes and backward arching of the body. However, this is not caused by disease, yet the condition is truly terrifying. Ordinary physicians invariably treat it as fright-wind, which is incorrect. If the cause is that during gestation the fetus was affected by the heat-toxin Qi from the mother's diet, accumulating in the chest cavity, before the third day after birth, it is appropriate to administer Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to clear heat and Ni Fen (Calamina) to disperse toxins. Ancients anticipated the pros and cons and also administered Ren Shen Zhu Mi Tang (Ginseng and Vermilion Honey Decoction) to clear accumulated toxins from the Heart and Lungs. Once resolved, the infant's abdomen remains healthy. Without doing so, every newborn might exhibit backward arching and upward staring, or have spontaneous attacks. It is strange that vulgar women do not consume heat-toxin foods. Even if cool medicines for fright-wind are used and recovery occurs, one must understand the rationale behind the medication, leaving judgment to the wise. If it is not transmitted from fright-wind, it is hoped that this will be examined in detail.
