The medical classics state: Red and purple dan liu (Dan tumors, a type of skin infection characterized by redness and swelling) are all caused by the internal stagnation of Heart Fire erupting. Their color is red like cinnabar, hence the name Dan Du (Erysipelas/Dan toxicity). The Heart governs Blood, and Fire nature is hot; when Blood and Heat contend with each other, Yin stagnates within Yang, resulting in the eruption of Dan Du. If the Heart is deficient and cold, itching occurs; if the Heart is excess and hot, pain occurs. Cases originating from the abdomen and spreading to the limbs are easy to treat, whereas those originating from the limbs and penetrating into the abdomen are difficult to cure. First, use Bai Jie San (Hundred-Element Powder to Release the Exterior) to release the exterior pathogen. Subsequently, administer Dang Gui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder) added with Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) and Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Herb), decocted in water. Also, use Niu Bang Tang (Arctium Decoction) added with fried Ma Ren (Hemp Seed), crushed and decocted together to vent heat and extract toxicity. Alternatively, Chi Ge San (Red Kudzu Root Powder) may be used, or Hua Dan Tang (Transform-Dan Decoction) at the onset is also good. When this condition manifests on the body, it resembles the aforementioned symptoms but is not very dry or itchy; instead, floating rashes appear all over the body, accompanied by mental confusion and displeasure, known as Yin Shi Du Zheng (Yin-Damp Toxicity Syndrome). First, administer Chong He Yin (Harmonizing Infusion) added with Nan Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root), water, and Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), decocted and taken orally. Subsequently, use Dang Gui San and Xiong Huang San (Realgar Powder). However, for these two syndromes, regardless of whether the color is red or white, if the pathogen enters the abdomen or Kidney, it often causes harm. It must not be treated lightly as an ordinary condition, lest one bring upon oneself distress.

In general, suffering from this syndrome implies that the Spleen, Heart, and Liver have repeatedly suffered from extreme heat, leading to conditions such as Chong She (Double Tongue), Mu She (Wooden Tongue), also referred to as She Huang (Yellow Tongue) and E Kou (Goose Mouth). Although the names differ, they all stem from Heat. Generally, Chong She arises under the tongue, protruding like a second tongue, hence the name. The collateral vessels of the Spleen connect to the sides of the tongue, those of the Liver to the root of the tongue, and those of the Heart to the base of the tongue. If these three meridians are invaded by Damp-Heat, Wind, or Cold, the tongue may curl up, extend long, or become swollen and full. Xiao Huang San (Eliminate-Yellow Powder) and Lv Pao San (Green-Robe Powder) should be primarily used, along with Dang Gui San and Qiang Huo San (Notopterygium Powder). Mu She refers to a tongue that is swollen, hard, and interferes with suckling and eating, caused by excessive Wind-Heat. Dang Gui Xie Huang San (Angelica Draining-Yellow Powder) and Yu Lu Yin (Jade-Dew Infusion) can be taken, followed by applying Xiao Huang San to rub on the tongue. Since the tongue is the organ of the Heart, Heart Heat generates sores and rupture; Liver congestion causes bleeding like a gush; Spleen closure results in white coating like snow; Heat causes swelling and fullness; Wind causes stiffness and inability to open the mouth. Accompanying signs include high fever in the four limbs, panting, and slurred speech. The treatment method involves cooling and resolving the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), clearing pathogenic heat from the Heart, Liver, and Spleen meridians, dispersing Wind, and transforming Phlegm. Initially, use Bai Jie San added with Wu He Tang (Five-Harmonies Decoction), decocted with water, ginger, and Deng Xin Cao (Rush Pith). Subsequently, use Niu Bang Tang combined with Dang Gui San and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), decocted with water and ginger. E Kou typically affects infants from one month to over half a year old. Suddenly, white debris fills the tongue inside the mouth, obstructing upwards, resembling a goose's mouth, remaining open and unable to close, with no voice and difficulty in feeding. This is also due to contracting Heat-Toxin, which stagnates and accumulates in the Spleen, then floats up to the tongue. At the peak stage, medication alone cannot instantly cure it. Urgently, tie a needle tip with silk thread, approximately the length of a millet grain, and pierce the small ulcers on the upper and lower parts of the tongue, sized like a mustard seed. Once yellow fluid and clear blood emerge slightly, relief will occur, after which the medications for the aforementioned syndromes can be administered. Additionally, apply Zhu Sha Gao (Cinnabar Ointment) and Di Huang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment) mixed and dabbed on the tongue; swallowing them is harmless. Xiao Huang San is also suitable.
