Pure-yang children, within a month or so after birth, may suddenly present with both eyes red, eyelids eroded, dry, and itchy. This condition is diagnosed by physicians as resulting from the mother contracting wind-heat pathogens during pregnancy, which transmit to the Heart and Liver meridians. Initially, Baijie San (Hundred-Resolving Powder) combined with Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder) should be decocted in water with ginger and Jiedixin (Lysimachiae Herba / Rush Pith) for oral administration. Subsequently, Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) and Niubang Tang (Arctii Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), and Chansha (Periostracum Cicadae) should be decocted in water; this will naturally prove effective.
If heat is extreme and complicated by wind, the eyes become red, swollen, and painful, remaining closed day and night, accompanied by incessant startled crying. Initially, Jiuxian San (Nine-Immortal Powder) should be administered, decocted in water with ginger and scallion white. Subsequently, Sandajie San (Three-Resolving Powder) should be taken with warm rice-washing water, and Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment) applied to the eyes.
After the eruption of douchuang (smallpox/measles), if nebulae form in the eyes, causing blurred vision, dryness, tearing, or eyelid edema preventing opening, this is due to residual toxins from the pox attacking the Liver. Administer Baijie San (Hundred-Resolving Powder) with a small amount of Wuhe Tang (Five-Harmonizing Decoction), decocted in water with ginger and Jiedixin (Lysimachiae Herba / Rush Pith). Next, use Niubang Tang (Arctii Decoction) to resolve the pathogen, wash the eyes with Huangjin San (Gold-Metal Powder), and frequently administer Shijian San (Persimmon Decoction Powder).
If nebulae form in the eyes after the pox, regardless of size, it is invariably caused by residual toxins. Use Niubang Tang (Arctii Decoction) and Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) added with Chansha (Periostracum Cicadae) and Baimi (White Honey), decocted in water. Subsequently, wash the eyes frequently at any time with Jinbo San (Golden-Wave Powder) and Huangjin San (Gold-Metal Powder). Treatment must further detail the deficiency and excess patterns. Additionally, use Qianghuo San (Notopterygii Powder) added with Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Gujingcao (Gigantochloae Caulis / Valerian Root - *Note: Contextually likely Gujingcao*), and Baijuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), decocted in water with Jiedixin (Lysimachiae Herba / Rush Pith) and Jiangpi (Zingiberis Pericarpium). Intermittently administer Tangjian San (Sugar-Decoction Powder).
If epidemic seasonal pathogens cause sudden redness, swelling, and pain in the eyes, suffering severely day and night, leading to long-term visual obscurity, the treatment method is first to use Jiuxian San (Nine-Immortal Powder) to release the exterior, followed by Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) removed, plus Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), decocted in water. Also administer Caolongdan San (Dragon Grass Gentian Powder) and apply Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment), along with applying Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment).
In children with deficient Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) on the exterior and excessive Pi Qi (Spleen Qi), the eyelids may become red and swollen, shy, and unable to open. If bitter-cold agents are hastily administered to reduce redness and swelling, they will damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to vomiting or diarrhea, or slight coldness of the four limbs. If warm medicines are then used to regulate, the eye disease will worsen. It is appropriate to first use Zujwuling San (Crushed Five-Ingredient Poria Powder - *Note: Likely Wuling San*), decocted in water with ginger and Jiedixin (Lysimachiae Herba / Rush Pith); subsequently, administering Xiehuang San (Draining Yellow Powder) will lead to self-healing.
If Heat accumulates in the Heart and Spleen over a long period, and the Liver is affected by pathogenic Heat, the two eyes may become photophobic, with swollen eyelids and a slight purple hue. Bowel movements may be constipated or smooth, and urination may be difficult or free-flowing. First, use Baijie San (Hundred-Resolving Powder) to release the exterior, then administer Mingmu Yin (Bright-Eye Drink) for natural recovery. Alcohol and meat should still be avoided for three to five days.
Children with weak constitutions often allow dust to enter the eyes; rubbing causes swelling, fever, pain, and incessant crying. Bi Chen Gao (Dust-Repellent Ointment) should be used for immediate effect.
