When an infant is first born, within the first seven days (one *qi*), if the abdomen becomes distended and hard, the area around the umbilicus swells, the mouth contracts with the jaw clenched, eyebrows knit during crying, this is named **Umbilical Wind Syndrome** (Qi Feng Zheng). This occurs because the umbilical cord was cut too short or tied loosely, allowing external wind pathogens to invade the umbilicus; or because iron tools were used to sever the cord, exposing it to cold invasion; or because the cord was pulled, causing water to enter and create sores, allowing guest wind to enter through the deficiency. The pathogen transmits to the Heart, where evil qi accumulates, then spreads to the Spleen meridians, resulting in a stiff tongue, cyanotic lips, slight convulsions of the hands and feet, inability to open the mouth for feeding, a hoarse cry resembling aphonia, and tidal sounds of phlegm-saliva in the throat. These are its manifestations. This condition often proves fatal. If it occurs after the first week, initially administer Jie Feng Gao (Wind-Seizing Paste), followed by Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) combined with Kuan Qi Yin (Broad-Qi Decoction), mixed with ginger juice, scallion white, and Jiedixin (Centella Herb), decocted in water and taken orally to resolve wind-phlegm. Alternatively, apply Yizi Jin (One-Character Gold) using Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction) or Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction) to smear inside the mouth; mild cases will recover quickly.
If the infant has robust constitution but presents with fever, phlegm, fright, and convulsions, administer Heibai Yin (Black-White Drink) or Wen Mi Tang (Warm Honey Soup), taken on an empty stomach. If there is slight diarrhea appearing tea-brown two or three times, subsequently administer Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) decocted with water, ginger, and jujube. This method is commonly effective.
If the umbilicus protrudes (*die* sound), the abdomen is tight, slightly greenish, and the mouth cannot open due to contraction, this indicates excessive Liver Wind suppressing Spleen Earth. Treatment is contraindicated. Such cases are almost invariably fatal. Even if they survive, they will not live long. One occasionally effective method: check for small blisters like millet grains on the infant's gum roots. Dip old silk cloth in warm water, wrap around the finger, and gently rub the blister until broken. The mouth will open, the tongue will soften, and self-healing will occur without medicine.
There is also a condition called Umbilical Protrusion, which is distinct from Umbilical Wind. This is caused by loose tying of the cord during bathing after birth, allowing dirty water to enter. After ten days postpartum, the umbilicus suddenly becomes smooth and swollen like an inflated balloon, making a slight sound when pressed, accompanied by occasional fright and crying. Treat with Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) plus Yiyiren (Coix Seed), decocted in water and taken warm on an empty stomach. Subsequently apply Waixiaosan (External Dissipation Powder) as a topical paste for natural resolution.
Night crying includes night crying due to Fright-Heat, Heart-Heat, Cold Colic, and accidental offense to deities. These four types are detailed below.
Fright-Heat Night Crying results from thick bedding or prolonged sitting in very warm places, causing irritability. Evil heat attacks the Heart. Since the Heart governs the Spirit (*Shen*), spirit disorder leads to fright. As the Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior partners, symptoms include crying, weeping, and enuresis. The treatment method is to suppress heat and calm the Heart, leading to peace. Main formulas include Baijie San (Hundred-Resolution Powder), Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction), and Sansanjie San (Three-Release Powder).
Heart-Heat Night Crying manifests as intensified crying under light, red face, and excessive tears, with relief in darkness. Fire is a Yang entity. When Heart-Heat encounters fire, two Yang forces clash, causing intense crying upon seeing light. As the classics state, "Rapid fire generates wind, which brings rain," illustrating this principle. The appropriate treatment is to cool the Heart and calm the Spirit. Use Baijie San (Hundred-Resolution Powder), or Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) added with Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Gancao (Licorice Root), decocted in water. Subsequently treat with Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction), Sansanjie San (Three-Release Powder), and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Dragon-Cradling Pill).
Some infants cry excessively and sleep little from dusk until midnight, continuing until dawn. This is due to cold acquired in the womb; at night, Yin prevails and Yang is weak. Symptoms include curved waist, sweating on the forehead, dry eyes, pale face with bluish tinge, prone position while crying, known as "Coiled Intestine Hanging Inside" syndrome, named Cold Colic (*Han Shan*). The treatment method is to eliminate retained cold and warm the Lower Jiao. Use Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction), Wumei San (Mume Powder), or Chonghe Yin (Harmony Decoction) added with salt-fried Zhuyu (Cornus Fruit) and Huixiang (Fennel), decocted with water and ginger. Gouteng Gao (Uncaria Paste) is also excellent.
Accidental Offense to Deities presents with purplish-black complexion, Qi stagnation resembling anger, fearful cries during waking, and startle during sleep. The infant hugs the mother tightly, crying incessantly. This is caused by accidentally offending taboo deities or being invaded by malevolent spirits. Since infants see things but cannot speak, they only cry in fright endlessly, with hidden fingerprint patterns. As stated in *Yuhuan Ji*: "Suddenly the hands' forms vanish, surely knowing one offended evil spirits." The treatment method is first to release the exterior, preferably with Baijie San (Hundred-Resolution Powder). Subsequently, expel evil and calm the Heart using Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Dragon-Cradling Pill), which will be effective.
