One must avoid pears, lotus roots, tangerines, mandarins, peaches, plums, bayberries, green olives, hawthorns, and other fruits.
Two must avoid cold congee, cold rice, mung beans, buckwheat, cold tea, cold water, and cooling medicines.
Three must avoid goose meat, dog meat, pig head meat, beef, sheep head meat, and other hard-to-digest foods.
Four must avoid amaranth, raw vegetables, and moss vegetables; the aforementioned foods cause lochia retention and abdominal pain, leading to disease.
Five must avoid sugar, alcohol, and separately decocted hawthorn soup, as all these damage newly generated blood.
Six must avoid calamus, ginger, and excessive consumption of pepper, mugwort, alcohol, and all excessively hot-natured substances, for fear that they might promote blood flow causing metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding).
One must avoid anger in the postpartum woman. If qi stagnation occurs within the first month, causing lochia retention and clot formation, it cannot be cured by medicine, and death will inevitably occur within three years. The same applies to afterbirth (miscarriage).
Two must avoid sexual intercourse. Engaging in it within the first month is fatal. Doing so within forty-nine days (seven sevens) leads to severe illness. It is permissible only after two months have passed. If abstained from for more than one hundred and twenty days, not only will the mother become robust, but it will also greatly benefit the infant.
Three must avoid contact with cold water. Using cold water to wash hands and feet within the first month will inevitably lead to wind-pain syndromes in old age. Even if extremely poor, one should observe this taboo to avoid lifelong affliction.
Four must avoid exposure to wind. Exposure to wind within the first month causes facial and ocular edema, and in old age, can lead to ulceration of the eyelids.
Diet consists of flavors that fill deficiency. After childbirth, the stomach and intestines are empty, and one cannot help but rely on diet to supplement and generate qi and blood. However, after fresh delivery, fatigue injures the spleen, making it unable to bear sweet and rich foods at once. If one adopts a light taste and advances gradually, transformation and transportation will be rapid. Yet, families unskilled in regulation worry only about the mother's deficiency, believing that eating more is beneficial. Suddenly using rich flavors as the foundation for tonification, forcing food upon a mother who has no appetite—how could they know that although the stomach accepts it, the spleen struggles to transport? Food stagnation leading to disease often occurs. Someone asks how to regulate this properly? The answer is: follow local customs. The most crucial point is not to injure the stomach with overeating. If the stomach is strong and desires food, one may eat several meals, but starvation should be avoided. After seven days, use yellow hen simmered thoroughly to extract the broth, skim off the floating oil, clarify the juice, and drink it; this best assists lactation power, but chicken meat itself should not yet be eaten. Within half a month, fresh pork must not be eaten; within one month, pork fat must not be eaten, because they obstruct meridians and collaterals, preventing the free flow of qi and blood. As for raw and cold fruits, they are especially taboo. Even duck eggs should not be eaten. Although chicken eggs have the effect of dispelling stasis and generating newness, they must be cracked open, mixed with rock sugar, and taken with boiling congee oil or rice infusion to be beneficial. Eating them whole easily causes stagnation. Soft-boiled eggs (sugar-heart eggs) are even more damaging. There are many other foods, difficult to list exhaustively. In summary, light flavors generate essence, while turbid flavors do not.
