The *Daquan* states: Women may give birth after seven or eight months of pregnancy, nine or ten months, or even one to two years, up to four years. Each case should be treated according to the following methods.
Lou stated: For those with premature labor urges, use cooling blood and calming the fetus method; for those with overdue non-labor, use nourishing blood and promoting stagnation resolution method.
Xue Ji stated: A pregnant woman at eight months felt the fetus was about to fall, resembling labor. Resting in bed provided slight relief, but symptoms worsened in the late afternoon. This was due to deficiency of Qi and Blood. In the morning, she took Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Fuling (Poria) and Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), which resolved the issue immediately. Subsequently, taking Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) for several doses stabilized the fetus.
Zhimu Wan (Anemarrhena Pill) treats pregnancy pain before full term, resembling labor, and also addresses difficult labor and fetal restlessness (a superb formula for treating fetal restlessness and fetal heat).
Take Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) in any quantity, grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a chestnut. Chew and swallow with warm wine, three times daily. Another prescription forms pills the size of a sesame seed, taken with rice gruel, twenty pills per dose.
Huai Zi Wan (Sophora Seed Pill) treats pregnancy where the months are insufficient but abdominal pain resembles impending labor.
Huai Zi (Sophorae Fructus) and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), equal parts.
Grind into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take twenty pills with warm wine, until pain ceases. (This formula is identical in ingredients to the Puhuang Wine used for retained placenta, differing only in that one is decocted as a liquid and the other formed into pills taken with wine. Although dosage forms differ, the herbs are the same. Consider this carefully.)
Another prescription: Take sifted Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), sized like a date pit, mix with well water and take orally.
Another prescription: Crush fresh Changpu root (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) to extract juice, one to two sheng, and pour into the throat.
Another prescription: Take dust from roof beams and soot from the stove chimney, grind together into powder. Take one cun bi (approx. 3-5 grams) with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substance Decoction) treats overdue non-labor by nourishing blood and resolving stagnation.
Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), Suosha (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Zisu (Perillae Folium).
Decoct in water and take orally; delivery will follow.
The *Daquan* states: When the viscera and bowels are harmonious, Qi and Blood are abundant, and wind pathogens or demons cannot invade. If Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi) are deficient and damaged, spirit becomes weak, allowing demonic essences to enter the viscera. The condition resembles pregnancy, hence called "Ghost Fetus" (Gui Tai).
Xue Ji stated: The aforementioned condition arises from emotional disturbances damaging the Spleen and Lung, leading to Qi and Blood deficiency, abnormal flow, and disharmony of the Chong and Ren vessels. It results from insufficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and excess pathogenic Qi. If menstrual irregularities appear, regulate and tonify immediately to prevent this condition. The treatment principle focuses on tonifying Yuan Qi, assisted by Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) to move and dissipate. If there is Spleen meridian depression with Qi rebellion, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction); if Spleen deficiency with Blood insufficiency, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); if Liver Fire consumes Blood, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to nourish and suppress; if Liver and Spleen depression with anger, use both Jiawei Guipi Tang and Xiaoyao San; if Kidney and Liver weakness, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).
A woman had amenorrhea for eight months, with gradual abdominal enlargement and complexion alternating between green and yellow. Medications for pregnancy were ineffective. Upon diagnosis, I stated: Green face, choppy pulse, alternating chills and fever indicate Liver meridian Blood pathology; yellow face, enlarged abdomen, poor appetite, and fatigue indicate Spleen meridian Blood pathology. This is a pattern of depression and anger injuring the Spleen and Liver, not pregnancy. The patient did not believe this and continued using pregnancy treatments without success. I administered Jiawei Guipi Tang and Xiaoyao San, each for over twenty doses, after which symptoms slightly improved. Desiring rapid effect, she took Tongjing Wan (Unblock Menses Pill) once, resulting in bleeding, fainting, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, cold extremities, vomiting, and inability to eat. I administered Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Paogjiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma) for two doses, after which she gradually recovered.
Zhangui Dan (Demon-Slaying Elixir) treats Ghost Fetus, feeling like holding a jar. (The following three formulas treat various parasitic or monstrous diseases manifesting as false Qi and Blood formations; why limit discussion only to Ghost Fetus?)
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata - note: original says Chuanwu, alternative uses Chuanxiong), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix), Badou (Crotonis Fructus - unrefined), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, vinegar-cooked), each two liang.
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take seven pills per dose with honey-wine. Evil matter will be discharged and health restored. For mild cases, remove Yuanhua, Badou, and Bajitian.
Banxuan Wan (Mylabris and Corydalis Pill) treats Ghost Fetus influenced by demons, resembling Jia masses (abdominal masses), effective for all Qi and Blood pain.
Banmao (Mylabris, head, feet, wings removed, stir-fried) (Use with caution) and Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma, stir-fried), each three qian.
Grind into powder, bind with paste to form pills, take with wine. Or grind into powder, mix with half qian using warm wine, until the mass/fetus is expelled.
Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) treats Ghost Fetus with blood stasis and abdominal pain. (Although it is said "if there is a cause, no harm occurs," highly toxic medicines must still be used with caution.)
Xionghuang (Realgar, finely ground), Guiji (Podophylli Peltati Rhizoma et Radix, hairs removed), Mangcao (Mastrantemi Herba), Dansha (Cinnabar, finely ground), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, oil removed), Taleigan (Lutrae Liver, roasted yellow), each half liang.
Xi yi (Gecko, one piece, roasted yellow), Wugong (Centipede, one piece, roasted yellow).
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take two pills per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach, twice daily. Diarrhea should follow. If no diarrhea, increase to three pills. Initially, clear water is discharged, followed by countless worm-like strands resembling horse tails. In severe cases, snake-like worms or substances resembling shrimp membrane eggs, chicken eggs, white paste, or bean juice are discharged, and the disease is cured.
Zhishi Binglang Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Areca Seed Pill) treats pregnancy Jia Pi masses (hard abdominal lumps) and conditions where diagnosis is uncertain. Long-term use calms and nourishes the fetus, dissipates Jia masses, and opens the diaphragm to promote appetite. (This formula is very mild; how can it treat Jia masses? It is suitable only for suspected cases.)
Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla, fried until pearl-like), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), each half liang.
Grind into powder, bind with water to form pills the size of mung beans. Take thirty pills per dose with warm rice drink, regardless of time, three times daily.
