Danggui Yin (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Four Substances Decoction) suppresses Yang and assists Yin, regulating the meridians. It is indicated for excessive menstrual flow without other accompanying symptoms.
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, slightly stir-fried), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, steamed with wine and baked), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, each 1 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted in water, and taken orally. If the condition persists and develops into metrorrhagia (blood flooding), add Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, fried), Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, fried), Diyü (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae); if bleeding still does not stop, add fresh juice of Mugeng (Herba Imperatae) ground together with ink. (For persistent bleeding with heat signs, this is appropriate; however, for cases due to Spleen Qi sinking and blood failing to remain within the vessels, such modifications are contraindicated.)
Jiao'ai Tang treats damage to Qi and Blood from overwork, deficiency and impairment of the Chong and Ren vessels, resulting in excessive menstrual flow and dripping continuously. It also treats improper care during pregnancy leading to unstable fetal Qi, or lower bleeding caused by trauma. (Since ancient times, Moxa leaf has been frequently used in regulating menstruation to warm the Lower Yuan. It is suitable for cases where Lower Yuan is deficient and blood descends with Qi. It is not necessary for cases of Heat in the Blood.)
Herbs: Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, each 1 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, each 0.75 qian), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, fried until granular), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, each 0.5 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted in water, and taken orally. Another prescription adds Diyü (Herba Siegesbeckiae) and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae).
Danxi Formula treats women with weak congenital constitution and insufficient Qi to control blood, resulting in heavy menstruation. (This formula uses no single blood-tonifying herb; students should understand this principle.)
Herbs: Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1.5 qian), Huangqi (Radix Astragali, raw), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, each 1 qian), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 0.2 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted in water, and taken orally.
Qifei Tang treats deficiency of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), causing irregular menstrual cycles with variable flow volume, accompanied by abdominal pain. Another view states it can be used for scanty menstruation due to Yin excess and Yang deficiency. (This formula uses blood-regulating herbs to treat irregular cycles and Qi-moving herbs to treat abdominal pain, focusing on the latter. The brilliance lies in equal proportions; otherwise, why use the last three herbs?)
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), Pengzhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Chuanjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, each equal parts).
Each dose is 4 qian, decocted in 1.5 cups of water until reduced to 0.8 cup, and taken warm.
Siwu Jia Kuihua Tang treats scanty and difficult menstrual flow.
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), Kuihua (Flos Hibisci Rosa-Sinensis, each 2 qian).
Another prescription adds Honghua (Flos Carthami) and Xuejianchou (Herba Polygoni Avicularis). (This formula entirely regulates the Blood aspect; red Kuihua must be used as it moistens dryness.)
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted in water, and taken orally.
Siwu Tang Plus Shudihuang and Danggui Tang treats scanty menstruation with normal color. (The brilliance lies in the term "normal color," especially in adding the latter two herbs.)
Herbs: Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction, 4 liang), plus Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, each 1 liang).
Each dose is 1 liang, decocted in water, and taken orally.
