以上诸方俱重剂,随寒热斟酌用。
Wenjing Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), cold hernia-like pain around the umbilicus radiating intensely, with a deep and tight pulse. This is caused by cold pathogen invading the Blood Chamber (uterus), causing blood coagulation and stagnation, which is then rushed by Qi mechanism; new blood and old blood struggle against each other, thus causing pain. It is suitable to use this decoction combined with Guizhi Taoren Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Peach Kernel Decoction).
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Guigui (Cortex Cinnamomi), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Ginseng (Radix Ginseng), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, honey-fried).
Preparation and Administration: Cut the herbs into small pieces. Add two zhong of water, decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time. (This is a warming and moving formula. Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is used without Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) to avoid cloying and stagnation. Ginseng combined with Guigui can warm and move; hence it is added. However, for various pains, Ginseng and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) are usually contraindicated, though there are cases where they are not needed. The key lies in appropriate selection.)
Guizhi Taoren Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Peach Kernel Decoction): Treats the same syndrome as mentioned above.
Source: See Menstrual Regulation Section (Pain Item).
Honghua Danggui San (Safflower and Angelica Powder): Treats women with amenorrhea, or accumulated blood stasis, causing lower back and abdominal pain, as well as unmarried girls with blocked menstruation.
Herbs: Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii), Dangguiwei (Caudex Angelicae Sinensis), Ziwei (Caulos Bignoniae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Sumu (Lignum Calami), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Liu Jinu (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take three qian with hot wine on an empty stomach, and again before meals and before sleep. (These are all blood-breaking drugs. Instead of using Chuanxiong to move blood in the Sea of Blood, Baizhi is used to move the Yangming Meridian because the Sea of Blood belongs to the Yangming.) If blood stagnation persists for a long time, decoct Honghua strongly and take with wine. Pregnant women must not take this.
Note: Also known as Lingxiaohua, which is Ziwei.
Xingjing Honghua Tang (Menstruation-Inducing Safflower Decoction): Treats women and unmarried girls with amenorrhea, accompanied by distending pain.
Herbs: Dangguiwei (Caudex Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Ziwei (Caulos Bignoniae), Liu Jinu (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Yanshusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii), Sumu (Lignum Calami), Taoren (Semen Persicae, fried), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi).
Preparation and Administration: One dose, decoct with water, take on an empty stomach. (This formula is not connected to the previous one; Qingpi and Taoren belong to the Jueyin Liver Meridian, so this distinction must be noted.)
Lingxiaohua San (Bignonia Flower Powder): Treats women with amenorrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Lingxiaohua (Caulos Bignoniae), Liu Jinu (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan, wine-washed), Yanshusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Guigui (Cortex Cinnamomi), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii, wine-soaked).
Preparation and Administration: Cut into pieces. Take four qian per dose, add one zhan of water and half a zhan of wine, decoct and take. (These are all blood-breaking and menstruation-inducing drugs. The mention of "fever" seems slight; since Mudanpi cools blood, are Guigui and Baizhi not warm/hot? Perhaps the emphasis is on the blockage rather than the heat. I observe the methods of wine-washing, wine-soaking, and wine-decocting; is this correct?)
Ruijin San (Ruijin Powder): Treats women with cramping pain due to Qi and Blood stagnation, and amenorrhea.
Herbs: Pian Jianghuang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Yanshusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Guigui (Cortex Cinnamomi), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii).
Preparation and Administration: Cut into pieces. Take eight qian per dose, add one zhan of water and three parts wine, decoct to eight parts, take before meals. (Jianghuang and Ezhu also relate to Qi and the Liver.)
Tuniuxi San (Achyranthes Powder): Treats women and unmarried girls with blood closure and blockage, with five-palm heat. (Specifically treats blood closure; has been effective for treating painful blood masses in women.)
Herbs: Tuniuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Dangguiwei (Caudex Angelicae Sinensis), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled, bran-fried), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Danggui San (Angelica Powder): Treats unblocked blood vessels. (Specifically treats conditions in the collaterals.)
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanshanjia (Squama Manis, lightly fried), Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae, fried), Chencha (Cinnabar, separately ground), Shexiang (Moschus).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder and mix evenly. Take two qian per dose with hot wine before meals.
Hupo San (Amber Powder): Treats mental confusion in the heart and diaphragm, cramping pain in abdominal organs, shortness of breath and chest oppression (specifically related to Qi), and amenorrhea.
Herbs: Tiantai Wuyao (Fructus Litseae Chinensis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae, baked, sliced).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose with warm wine, followed by food to settle the medicine. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods. For postpartum diseases, take with stir-fried ginger wine.
Taonu Yinzi (Peach Bud Decoction): Treats women and unmarried girls with amenorrhea gradually leading to distension, and treats men with injuries from falling off horses or bruises causing blood stasis accumulation, potentially developing into blood gu disease. All can be treated.
Herbs: Taonu (Dried immature peaches remaining on the tree, collected in winter or first lunar month), Shufen (Mouse feces, specifically male mouse feces pointed at both ends), Yanshusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Wulingzhi (Faeces Trogopterori), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Xiangfuzi (Fructus Cyperi Rotundi), Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled and de-seeded, separately ground).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach. (These turbid yin substances break stagnant blood, assisted by warm/hot flavors to move stagnant Qi and Blood, aiming for circulation.)
Wanbing Wan (Ten Thousand Diseases Pill): Treats absent menstruation and cold hernia pain around the umbilicus.
Herbs: Ganqi (Resina Taxilli, crushed and fried until smoke ceases, must be greenish-white, sustained for one shichen), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata, stems removed, soaked in wine overnight, dried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Add one sheng of fresh Shengdihuang juice (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) to the two powders, slowly boil in a silver vessel. (The brilliance lies in using Shengdihuang juice to process blood-breaking herbs.) Form into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take two pills per dose with rice drink or wine on an empty stomach.
The above formulas are all mild agents, selected according to cold or heat.
Tongjing Wan (Menstruation-Unblocking Pill): Treats amenorrhea and painful blood masses. (Does not use insects like Mengchong (Blatta Orientalis), Shuizhi (Hirudo), or Banmao (Mylabris); it is a mild agent among heavy agents, very safe.)
Herbs: Guiwei (Caudex Angelicae Sinensis), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled and de-seeded), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, baked), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Ganqi (Resina Taxilli, fried until smoke ceases), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii, vinegar-fried), Shexiang (Moschus).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Use five qian of Saojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) and two qian of Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa), decoct with water to make a paste for pills, size of paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills per dose with rice soup.
Chanbao Fang (Child-Birth Treasure Formula): Treats amenorrhea and abdominal pain.
Herbs: Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled, de-seeded, fried), Xixin (Herba Asari), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shuizhi (Hirudo, fried with glutinous rice until yellow, must be thoroughly charred as raw is harmful).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, form pills with refined honey, size of paulownia seeds. Take twenty pills per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Qianjin Taoren Jian (Thousand Gold Peach Kernel Decoction): Treats blood accumulation and mass formation, amenorrhea. (This is a cooling and moving formula, suitable for blood clumped due to heat.)
Herbs: Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, wrapped in wet paper and baked), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled, de-seeded, fried), Pomiao (Natrii Sulfas), Mengchong (Ovum Bombydis, feet and wings removed, fried black).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Add two sheng half of vinegar, slowly boil in a silver or earthenware vessel to make a paste. Then add Dahuang, Mengchong, and Taoren powders, stirring constantly. When ready to form pills, add Pomiao and stir again. Remove after some time, form into pills size of paulownia seeds. At dawn, take five pills with warm wine. By noon, discharge material resembling red bean juice, chicken liver, or frog skin. Once fresh red color stops, tonify with Qi-regulating medicines.
Heblood Tongjing Wan (Harmonizing Blood and Unblocking Menstruation Pill): Treats women with stagnant menstrual flow, lower back, back, umbilical, and abdominal pain, gradually forming blood masses. (According to Fang Guang: Amenorrhea can be due to blood stagnation or blood deficiency. This formula is suitable for blood stagnation but inappropriate for blood deficiency, akin to seeking gold from a beggar; examine carefully.)
Herbs: Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Ganqi (Resina Taxilli, fried until smoke ceases), Wulingzhi (Faeces Trogopterori), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Guangzhu (Rhizoma Curcumae, baked), Shuizhi (Hirudo, fried), Mengchong (Ovum Bombydis, 34 pieces, head, feet, wings removed, dried), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 27 pieces, soaked in water, peeled, de-seeded).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, form pills with vinegar paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take twenty pills before meals with vinegar water or wine.
Note: Shuizhi and Mengchong consume blood, thus used to break hardness; not suitable if no blood mass exists.
Banmao Tongjing Wan (Mustard Beetle Menstruation-Unblocking Pill): Treats closed menstruation and also dry blood qi.
Herbs: Banmao (Mylabris, 20 pieces, fried with glutinous rice - highly toxic, causes urinary retention, resolved with Muxiang and Huashi. However, for dry blood qi, blood-nourishing drugs should be used first; do not take lightly to cause dryness), Taoren (Semen Persicae, 49 pieces, fried), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 5 qian, brocade pattern).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, form pills with wine paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take five pills on an empty stomach with wine, ten for severe cases. For amenorrhea due to blood deficiency, take with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Another prescription adds half a qian of Mengchong and one qian of Shuizhi.
Dahuang Gao (Rhubarb Paste, also known as General Pill): Treats women's dry blood qi.
Herbs: Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, four liang, powdered), strong vinegar.
Preparation and Administration: Boil powder with strong vinegar into a paste, form pills size of chicken heads. Take one pill per dose, dissolve in wine, take warm before bed. After one or two bowel movements, red menses will naturally flow; this is a fairy medicine for regulating menstruation. (Dry blood qi is heat-related, so only Dahuang is used to clear heat and unblock menstruation. Adding Danggui tou nourishes blood, Xiangfu regulates Qi; choose as desired.) Another prescription adds Danggui tou; another adds two liang of Xiangfu, soaked in child's urine, fried, powdered, mixed into paste, formed into paulownia-sized pills, take forty pills with hot wine.
Shenghui Fang (Holy Benefit Formula): Treats women with sluggish menstruation, forming masses, causing severe distension. (Single herb treatment for blood vessels is safest.)
Herbs: Mabiancao (Herba Verbena Officinalis, five jin, finely cut).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with five dou of water until one dou remains, strain, keep in clean container, boil down to paste. Take half a spoon with warm wine before meals.
Tongjing Wan (Menstruation-Unblocking Pill): Treats women and unmarried girls with amenorrhea or blood masses.
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, fried), Chuanjiao (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, fried to remove sweat), Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii, processed), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Ganqi (Resina Taxilli, fried until smoke ceases), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, processed), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled, de-seeded, fried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. First, boil one-fourth part with rice vinegar to make a paste, mix with the remaining six parts, pound in mortar, form into pills size of paulownia seeds, dry in sun. Take twenty pills per dose with light vinegar water, increase to thirty pills if necessary, warm wine is also acceptable, take on empty stomach before meals. (This formula gathers large amounts of hot drugs; do not take unless due to cold coagulation, Qi stagnation, and blood forming masses.) Jisheng Fang removes Chuanwu and adds Honghua.
The above formulas are all heavy agents, use with caution according to cold or heat.
