The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "Inquiry regarding the five types of Beng (uterine bleeding): what do they resemble?" The Master replied: "White Beng resembles mucus; Red Beng resembles dark red fluid; Yellow Beng resembles rotten melon; Blue Beng resembles blue color; Black Beng resembles epistaxis (nosebleed)."
If the Cun (inch) position pulse is wiry and large, wiry indicates reduction (reduction means small), large indicates hollow like a scallion stalk (Kou). Reduction indicates cold, hollow indicates deficiency. Cold and deficiency intermingling result in a Ge (leather) pulse. In women, this manifests as miscarriage (half-birth) and Lou Xia (dripping vaginal bleeding). If the Chi (cubit) position pulse is urgent, wiry, and large, it indicates wind pathogen invading the Shaoyin meridian, causing women to suffer from red and white dripping bleeding. If red and white dripping bleeding continues without stopping, a pulse that is small, deficient, and slippery indicates survival (good prognosis); a pulse that is large, tight, solid, and rapid indicates death (poor prognosis). If red and white dripping bleeding occurs with several sheng (units of volume) of blood loss daily, a rapid and urgent pulse indicates death; a slow pulse indicates survival.
Jingjie Siwu Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction of Four Substances): Treats early-stage Beng and Lou (uterine bleeding and dripping discharge), regardless of deficiency or excess, stopping immediately upon administration.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Tiaoqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried), Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried, each 1 qian).
Crush the above ingredients. Decoct in water and take orally. (Blood is stored in the Liver. If Liver Qi does not ascend, heat forces downward, so blood cannot be contained and Beng occurs. Moreover, the Jueyin meridian circles the genitalia, and the anterior yin orifice belongs to it. Jingjie ascends Liver Qi, Xiangfu regulates Liver Qi, Tiaoqing clears internal heat, and Shengdi and Shaoyao from Siwu Tang nourish blood and cool blood, thus achieving efficacy.) If bleeding does not stop, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen). Another prescription adds Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix), which is particularly effective. Another prescription is Siwu Tang plus Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Qixiao Siwu Tang (Miraculously Effective Decoction of Four Substances): Treats deficiency-heat in the Liver meridian, where blood boils and persists for a long time without stopping.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried until pearl-like), Aye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried, each 1 qian).
Crush the above ingredients. Decoct in water and take orally. (This formula uses Shudihuang to tonify the mother of the Liver [Kidney], uses Ejiao and Huangqin to benefit Liver Qi, and uses Aye to warm the lower origin to assist the ascent of true Qi. This is known as 'Yin arises from Yang'.)
Hejian Shengdihuang San (Hejian Rehmannia Powder): Treats menstrual dripping bleeding, with a deficient and flooding pulse, and menstrual blood that is purple-black.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix).
Chop the above ingredients. Decoct in water and take orally. (A flooding and deficient pulse indicates insufficiency of Qi; purple-black color indicates heat in the blood. Huangqi tonifies Qi, but excessive Qi can generate fire, so Tiandong and Digupi are added to clear fire in the Qi level. Shudihuang generates blood. If generated blood is not cooled, it tends to run recklessly, so Shengdihuang and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) are used to cool the Heart; Shaoyao and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) soothe the Liver and benefit the Spleen; Chaihu and Huangqin clear the Liver and promote ascent; Gouqizi and Shudihuang target both Liver and Kidney.) For hematochezia (blood in stool), add Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix).
Liangxue Dihuang Tang (Cool Blood Rehmannia Decoction): Treats persistent uterine bleeding in women due to Kidney Water Yin deficiency, failing to suppress the Minister Fire in the Bao Luo (uterine network), causing blood to rush and bleed.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Danggui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail, each 5 fen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, each 2 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, each 1 fen), Honghua (Carthami Flos, a small amount).
Chop the above ingredients. Prepare as one dose, decoct in water, and take slightly warm on an empty stomach. (The classic states: 'Yin arises urgently from Yang.' Blood belongs to Yin, and Yin cannot ascend by itself. Therefore, blood from all meridions must ascend following the Qi of those meridians. If Qi sinks, heat forces blood to collapse internally. Thus, Huangbai is used to clear fire in the Lower Jiao and Bao Luo; since the Heart is the master of Fire, Shengdihuang and Huanglian are used to treat the source of fire; Zhimu and Huangqin nourish the mother of Water [Kidney]; Dangguiwei breaks stasis, Honghua generates blood, known as 'removing the old to generate the new'; Chuanxiong moves residual blood in the Blood Sea; Manjingzi cools blood in all meridians; and wind-dispelling herbs are used to ascend Qi in all meridians. When Qi of all meridians ascends, Yin blood inevitably rises with it. Hence, it is said 'arising urgently from Yang.' Those with these symptoms should follow this method.)
Xiaoji Tang (Small Thistle Decoction): Treats persistent Beng and Lou, where blood color is bright like water, and warmth causes irritability. This indicates Yang injury by Yin, leading to lower bleeding; one should tonify Yin. A rapid, urgent, and small pulse is favorable; a large pulse is unfavorable.
Xiaoji Jingye (Herba Cirsii Japonici Stem and Leaf, crushed for juice), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, crushed for juice, each 1 zhan), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, chopped).
Combine the above three items with 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced by half, remove dregs, and take warm.
Xiongjiu (Chuanxiong Wine): Treats Zhong Beng (heavy uterine bleeding) continuing day and night, refractory to medical treatment.
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shengdihuangzhi (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 1 zhan).
Use 5 zhan of wine to decoct Chuanxiong until 1 zhan remains, remove dregs, add Shengdihuangzhi, boil for two or three more boils, divide into three doses. (This formula uses wine to decoct Chuanxiong combined with Shengdihuangzhi, possessing subtle efficacy, very miraculous indeed.)
