The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: In women suffering from hernia, mass, and accumulation disorders, a wiry and rapid pulse indicates survival, while a weak pulse indicates death. If the Shaoyin pulse is floating and tight, the tightness indicates hernia or mass with abdominal pain, or injury from miscarriage and abortion; the floatingness indicates blood loss, aversion to cold, and sterility.
Kaiyu Zhengyuan San (Open Stagnation and Rectify Origin Powder): Treats phlegm-fluid, blood qi stagnation, food retention, leading to impaired ascending and descending of qi, resulting in accumulation and distending pain. This formula is suitable for promoting qi movement and blood circulation, harmonizing the spleen, and resolving stagnation.
Ingredients: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), Hai Fen, Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Poria (Fuling), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusuo), Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis (Shenqu - stir-baked), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao - honey-fried). All in equal parts.
Usage: Coarsely crush the herbs, add fresh ginger, and decoct in water. Take one liang per dose, with three slices of fresh ginger, decocted in water. (Note: This formula is a balanced agent for treating qi, blood, phlegm, and food stagnation. Hai Fen should not be decocted; it is better prepared as pills.)
Da Qi Qi Tang (Great Seven-Qi Decoction): Treats accumulations and masses that move up and down with qi, causing severe colicky pain in the heart and abdomen, rebellious qi with obstruction, lower abdominal fullness, and difficulty in urination and defecation. (This formula is only applicable when both pathogenic qi and constitutional qi are excess. The key lies in the phrase "moving up and down with qi." It is contraindicated for patients with qi stagnation transforming into fire.)
Ingredients: Sparganii Rhizoma (Jingsanleng), Curcumae Rhizoma (Pengru) - both roasted and sliced; Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi) - white pith removed; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) - white pith removed; Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) - stir-baked; Pogostemonis Herba (Huoxiangye); Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren); Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng); Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) - protected from direct fire; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) - honey-fried. Each at 7.5 qian.
Usage: Coarsely chop the herbs. Take five qian per dose, with two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, and take warm before meals.
Zhuqi Wan (Qi-Assisting Pill): Treats blockage in the Triple Burner, chest and diaphragmatic fullness and oppression, stagnant qi flow, accumulation formation due to entrapment, and fixed masses.
Ingredients: Sparganii Rhizoma (Jingsanleng), Curcumae Rhizoma (Pengru) - these two ingredients wrapped in wet paper and roasted thoroughly in ash embers, then sliced, each 2 jin; Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi) - white pith removed; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) - white pith removed; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) - each 15 liang; Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) - bran-fried and pulp removed; Arecae Semen (Binglang); Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muxiang) - each 10 liang.
Usage: Grind into powder, make pills with paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with boiling water. (This formula breaks hard accumulations and disperses stagnant qi. Although Baizhu is used as an assistant herb, it should not be taken lightly by those with qi deficiency.)
Shenghong Wan (Red-Overcoming Pill): Treats spleen accumulation with qi stagnation, chest and diaphragmatic fullness, shortness of breath and restlessness, vomiting clear fluid, male alcohol accumulation, female spleen-blood accumulation, and pediatric food retention. (Applicable for patients with stomach cold and excess.)
Ingredients: Sparganii Rhizoma (Jingsanleng), Curcumae Rhizoma (Ezhu) - boiled together in vinegar; Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi); Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi); Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum (Ganjiang) - processed; Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (Liangjiang) - stir-baked, each 1 liang; Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) - cleaned and stir-baked, 2 liang.
Usage: Grind into powder, make pills with vinegar paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with ginger soup. For deficient cases, take with tonic medicine (this is the clever aspect of medication).
Another prescription adds Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis (Shenqu) and Malto (Maiya).
Sanleng Jian (Spargania Decoction): Treats female blood masses and blood stasis, food retention, and phlegm stagnation.
Ingredients: Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng), Curcumae Rhizoma (Ezhu) - each 1 liang; Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi) - white pith removed; Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) - soaked in boiling water seven times; Malto (Maiya) - stir-baked, each 2 liang.
Usage: Use six sheng of good vinegar, boil until dry, grind into powder, make pills with vinegar paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with light vinegar soup. (The efficacy lies in moving qi and blood, resolving phlegm and food, with the clever use of abundant vinegar. For phlegm accumulation, take with ginger soup.)
Xiang Leng Wan (Fragrant Spargania Pill): Treats all types of accumulation, breaks phlegm masses, and resolves nodules.
Ingredients: Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muxiang), Syringae Flos (Dingxiang) - each half liang; Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) - flour-fried; Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng) - soaked in wine overnight; Curcumae Rhizoma (Ezhu) - finely chopped, stir-fried with thirty shell-less Semen Crotonis (Badou) per one liang of Ezhu; when Badou turns yellow, remove Badou and do not use; Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium (Qingpi) - processed; Toosendan Fructus (Chuanlianzi Rou); Fragrant herb (Xiang) - stir-baked, all in equal parts. Note: The text says "Xiang", likely referring to Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) given the context of Xiang Leng Wan.
Usage: Grind into powder, boil with vinegar (this is a warming and moving method, potent but not harsh, moderate in action, cleverly using vinegar). Make pills with flour paste, size of paulownia seeds, coated with Cinnabar (Zhusha). Take 30 pills per dose with ginger-salt soup or warm wine, at any time.
Da Xiaoshi Wan (Great Niter Pill): Treats the seven types of jia and eight types of lei, clustered痞 masses, and female leukorrhea with sterility, or abdominal masses. These should be purged first. This drug removes masses without causing exhaustion. (Most formulas for removing masses use hot herbs to move qi and break hardness, but this formula contains tonification within resolution, truly a precious prescription. Users may try it.)
Ingredients: Natrii Nitras (Xiaoshi) - 3 liang; Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) - 4 liang; Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) - each 1 liang.
Usage: Grind into powder. Place three sheng of three-year-old vinegar (Ku Jiu) in a copper or earthenware vessel. First, decoct Dahuang over low heat until slightly boiling, stirring constantly, until reduced to seven-tenths. Add remaining herbs and continue decocting into a paste. When ready to form pills, make them size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with rice drink, once every three days. After women take this, they may discharge substances resembling chicken liver, rice wash water, or dark red/black matter, totaling two to three sheng. Afterwards, avoid wind and cold.
awei Gao (Asafoetida Plaster): Treats all types of痞 masses.
Ingredients: Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo); Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duohuo); Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui); Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao); Manis Squama (Chuanshanjia); Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang); Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang); Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi); Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma); Bupleuri Radix (Liangtoujian) - each 5 qian; Carthami Flos (Honghua) - 4 qian; Strychni Semen (Mubiezi) - ten grains, shells removed; Ramulus Tamaricis (Huaizhi), Ramulus Salicis (Liuzhi), Ramulus Persicae (Taozhi) - each 3 qian; Hominis Capillis Usticus (Luancha) - a ball the size of a chicken egg.
Usage: Use two jin four liang of sesame oil. Fry until black, strain, add hair, fry until hair dissolves, strain again. Slowly add Litharge (Huangdan) and fry until consistency is appropriate. Add Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), Asafoetida (Awei), Suhe Xiang Oil, Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang), and Myrrha Resina (Moyao) - each 5 qian; Moschus (Shexiang) - 3 qian. Mix well to form plaster. Apply to the affected area, spread about half a finger thick, cover with paper, and apply heat with a hot iron for a long time. If Mangxiao depletes, re-apply heat. After about two hours (si), apply the plaster.
