Kou Zongshi stated: Human life is based on Qi and Blood. Diseases in humans invariably begin with the injury of Qi and Blood. In the case of unmarried girls and boys, if they harbor obsessive thoughts and overthink, it often leads to consumptive damage. Men will exhibit a dissipation of their spirit and complexion, while women will experience amenorrhea first. This is because sorrow and overthinking injure the Heart, causing blood to become rebellious and exhausted; consequently, the spirit and complexion dissipate first, and menstruation ceases first. Furthermore, if the Heart is injured, it fails to nourish the Spleen, leading to anorexia. Spleen deficiency results in Lung metal deficiency (Earth failing to generate Metal), causing coughing. When Kidney Water is exhausted, Liver Wood qi fails to flourish, leading to dry and flaccid limbs, irritability, scorched hair at the temples, and flaccid sinews and bones. If the pathological qi spreads through all five zang organs, death ensues. If one can alter their mindset and use medicinal support, life may be preserved. One must absolutely avoid using cooling and blood-invigorating herbs such as Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) or Mengchong (Tabanidae). It is advisable to use Baiziren Wan (Biota Seed Pill) or Zelan Tang (Lycopus Decoction) to tonify Yin and Blood.
Xue Ji stated: The medical classics record that when the five grains enter the stomach, their dregs, fluids, and Zong Qi (Gathering Qi) are distributed through three pathways. Thus, Zong Qi accumulates in the chest, emerges from the throat, penetrates the Heart and Lungs, and governs respiration. Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) secretes its fluids, injects them into the vessels, transforms them into blood, and thereby nourishes the four extremities and internally nourishes the five zang and six fu organs (this also requires attending to the Spleen, fulfilling the functions of Stomach Yang and Spleen Yin, though their therapeutic focuses differ).
If bitter-cold agents are taken, further injuring Stomach Qi, it will inevitably lead to untreatable conditions.
A seventeen-year-old unmarried girl suffered from a condition that had not healed for a long time; her Tian Gui (menstruation/reproductive essence) had not yet commenced, accompanied by fever, cough, and poor appetite. She wished to use Tongjing Wan (Menstruation-Promoting Pill). I said: This is likely due to insufficient congenital constitution and unfulfilled Yin Blood. By nourishing Qi and Blood and replenishing body fluids, menstruation will naturally resume. Confused by the desire for rapid effects, she still used the medicine. I said: This is not the correct treatment. This is a fierce and potent preparation that greatly assists Yang Fire; upon contact with it, Yin Blood will flow recklessly, and the Spleen and Stomach will become increasingly deficient. Indeed, the consequence was reckless menstrual bleeding, further reduced food intake, and ultimately, untreatable decline.
The Mai Jing (Pulse Classic) records: A mother brought her fifteen-year-old daughter for consultation. She stated that her daughter’s menstruation began naturally at age fourteen, but has now ceased, causing the mother great fear. The physician said: If this is your biological daughter, you must have also begun menstruating at age fourteen. Therefore, the cessation is known as "Bi Nian" (Avoidance Year) (Since there is a name for Avoidance Year, no forced treatment is necessary). Do not be alarmed; menstruation will resume spontaneously later. This occurs because the True Qi is still weak and the congenital constitution is inherently frail. One should consolidate the Tian Yuan True Qi, causing Water to ascend and Fire to descend, so that the five zang organs harmonize naturally and the meridians and vessels become unobstructed.
