The *Qiusi Quanshu* (Complete Book for Seeking Heirs) records the "Regulation of Menstruation and Harmonization Formula" stating: There is a category of women whose menstruation occurs specifically during the waning moon phase (approximately the 22nd to 24th day of the lunar month). It is necessary to employ blood-nourishing methods to advance the cycle. If the menstrual blood appears dark purple, it indicates Blood Heat (Xue Re); administering cooling-blood herbs can moderate the Qi and Blood, causing the cycle to gradually delay until it harmonizes and eventually returns to the beginning of the month. If the menstrual blood is pale, scanty, and short in duration, administer blood-nourishing and blood-harmonizing herbs to nourish the Mingmen (Gate of Life), also advancing the cycle to the beginning of the month. Medication should be adjusted according to the woman's fatness, thinness, strength, and weakness. One month may not suffice for alignment; through prolonged regulation, the cycle will eventually align with the waxing moon phase (approximately the 7th to 8th day of the lunar month). This is the method of regulating menstruation. (Some menstrual conditions cannot be forcibly regulated, such as women who menstruate only once a year or continuously throughout the four seasons). Intercourse during the waxing moon phase tends to result in male offspring. Another category of women is obese, with excessive fatty membranes filling the uterus (Zigong). Even if menstruation is regular, this condition causes infertility. They require herbs that open the uterus to dissolve these fatty membranes.
Mr. Yuan states: Chao Yuanfang discusses female pregnancy. In the first month, it is called Taipei (Fetal Embryo), nourished by the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. In the second month, it is called Shigao (Beginning Paste), nourished by the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. In the third month, it is called Shitai (Beginning Fetus), nourished by the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. In the fourth month, it begins to receive Water Essence to circulate Blood vessels, nourished by the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. In the fifth month, it begins to receive Fire Essence to form Qi, nourished by the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. In the sixth month, it begins to receive Metal Essence to form sinews, nourished by the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. In the seventh month, it begins to receive Wood Essence to form bones, nourished by the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. In the eighth month, it begins to receive Earth Essence to form skin and flesh, nourished by the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. In the ninth month, it begins to receive Stone Essence to form hair, nourished by the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. In the tenth month, the Zang organs, Fu organs, joints, and Shen (Spirit) are all complete, nourished by the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian. This is the general overview. (The embryo manifests from Qi at the onset; Pei is the form of Qi, Gao is the condensation of Qi, Tai is the attachment of form. Pre-heaven controls biological transformation, thus using Water, Fire, Metal, Wood, Earth, and Stone to constrain and transform it; post-heaven develops sequentially, thus following the generation cycle of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Nourishment follows reverse principles, transformation follows forward principles, achieving natural wonder.) To explore details, after conception in the abdomen, changes occur every seven days, transforming into one another with mutual generation, as detailed in the *Daji Jing*. Currently, miscarriages among women occur mostly in the third, fifth, and seventh months, and less frequently in the second, fourth, and sixth months. Zang organs are Yin, Fu organs are Yang. The third month belongs to the Heart, the fifth to the Spleen, and the seventh to the Lung; all involve the meridians of the Five Zang organs. Yin is prone to deficiency, hence miscarriage is common. If a woman previously miscarried in the third month, the Heart Meridian was injured; one must first regulate the Heart, otherwise, miscarriage will recur in the third month. If she previously miscarried in the fifth month, the Spleen Meridian was injured; one must first treat the Spleen, otherwise, miscarriage will recur in the fifth month. Only in cases of miscarriage within the first month do people remain unaware of the pregnancy, believing merely that conception did not occur, rather than recognizing it as a miscarriage. The first month belongs to the Liver. Anger can cause miscarriage; frequent washing of the lower body opens the orifices and can also cause miscarriage. Once a miscarriage occurs, the Liver Meridian is injured, predisposing to future miscarriages. Most infertile women today have suffered miscarriages in the first month, not because they fail to conceive, but due to early loss. Therefore, after initial intercourse, utmost rest is essential. Avoid further sexual activity to prevent disturbing the uterus. Avoid anger, fatigue, lifting heavy objects, and bathing. Additionally, consume more herbs that nourish the Liver and calm Qi, ensuring the fetus remains secure.
