According to Chen Cangqi: It grows in the valleys of the South Sea and is a herbaceous plant. Its nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It mainly treats epidemic febrile diseases (Tianxing Shiqi), ghostly or evil spirits (Guimei Xiejing), etc., and is suitable for burning. Additionally, it can be boiled in water to wash edema and floating qi (Shuizhong Fuxi). When decocted with earth ginger (Tujian) and mustard seeds (Jiezi) as a bath solution, it is very effective in treating wind malaria (Feng Nüe). (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 10, p. 45; Zhenghe Bencao p. 258; Bencao Gangmu p. 828)
According to Mr. Chen: It grows in Lingnan and the mountains of the South Sea. Each stem has thirty roots, resembling Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) in shape. Its taste is bitter, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It mainly treats toxic carbuncles and ulcers (Dujie Yongju) with miraculous efficacy. The variety from Zhongwan Prefecture is the best; other herbal stems have similar efficacy and can be taken orally after decoction with water. Because toxins are prevalent in Lingnan, every household stores it. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 10, p. 45; Zhenghe Bencao p. 258; Bencao Gangmu p. 791)
According to Guangzhou Ji: It grows in the valleys of Guangnan, possessing pods about two chi long, containing thin flakes like paper, the size of cicada wings. It treats evil pathogens. Both males and females should carry one piece in a crimson silk bag on their arm to ward off evil and stop palpitations/fright (Zhi Jing). This herb grows in the south, hence the name "Nanbei Zi" (North-South Character). People nowadays often use the characters "Nan Nu" (Male-Female), which is incorrect. The herb "Yinan Cao" refers to Daylily Rhizome (Xuann Cao). (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 10, p. 45; Zhenghe Bencao p. 258; Bencao Gangmu p. 1096)
According to Guang Zhi: It grows in the valleys of Hainan. Mr. Chen states it grows in Xuzhou. Its nature is slightly cold, and it is non-toxic. It mainly treats cholera-like disease (Huoluan) and wards off foul air (Eqi); it is good for incense for clothing. Qimin Yaoshu states: For any trees infested by insects, boiling this incense and pouring the cooled liquid over them effectively prevents insect damage. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 10, p. 45; Zhenghe Bencao p. 259; Bencao Gangmu p. 827)
According to Guangzhou Ji: It grows in Lingnan and coastal areas. The vines resemble Ipomoea Batatas (Tugua), and the roots are similar. Its taste is acrid, its nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It mainly treats all kinds of toxic vapors and snakebites. One should take the root, grind it, and ingest it; upon doing so, various poisons will be vomited out. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 10, p. 46; Zhenghe Bencao p. 259; Bencao Gangmu p. 1038)
