Avoiding heat in deep halls, irregular daily routines. Sweating with irritability, a greasy complexion, slight aversion to cold on the back, or slightly cold hands and feet; in severe cases, shivering with hair standing on end. When the Cou Li (pores) are open, there is a chilliness; when closed, there is a steaming heat and oppression. This is because the Fire of the Pericardium cannot withstand the seasonal Fire, thus resulting in a slight aversion to cold. Or, sitting and lying in cool places, the exterior deficiency cannot withstand wind and cold. Mistaking it for an external contraction, one might mistakenly use diaphoretic treatments by physicians, leading to disaster as quickly as turning a hand. Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang (Clear Summerheat and Boost Qi Decoction) is suitable.
In cool pavilions, water pavilions, or under the dense shade of large trees, excessive exposure to cold and rapid cooling leads to attack by Cold. Headache, aversion to cold, fever, and stiff limbs indicate this is also a type of Cold contraction. The pulse must be Wiry and Tight. Xiao Shu Shi Quan San (Eliminate Summerheat Ten-Ingredient Powder) is suitable.
For Spleen Qi deficiency with profuse sweating and aversion to cold, Shi Wei Xiang Ru Yin (Ten-Ingredient Mosla Decoction) is used.
For damage from overeating, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and cholera-like symptoms, Liu He Tang (Six-Harmony Decoction) or Xiang Ru Zheng Qi San (Mosla Regulating Qi Powder) is suitable. Summerheat stroke can also present without sweating and with a Wiry and Fine pulse. Although this is summerheat stroke, it must be due to excessive exposure to coolness, which suppresses the Yang Qi within the body, causing mental restlessness, hot skin, and no sweating. This is not caused by Summerheat pathogen per se. Xiao Shu Shi Quan San (Eliminate Summerheat Ten-Ingredient Powder) is suitable; do not use all diaphoretic herbs. In summer months, the Cou Li are easily open; taking Xiang Ru (Mosla Herb) warm can induce sweating. If the Ren Ying pulse (at the carotid artery) is Wiry and Tight while the Qi Kou pulse (at the radial artery) is surprisingly large, accompanied by cough, eye pain, clear nasal discharge, and pain at the forehead and brow angles, Xuan Qi Tang (Select Extraordinary Decoction) is most effective.
Bathing after sweating and rising into the wind, or bathing in cold water, or sitting/lying on damp ground causes illness not due to Summerheat injury, but self-inflicted. It should be treated with warming dispersal.
During times of Summerheat and Heat, indulging in sexual desire, combined with consuming rich foods and fruits together, prevents the Yang Qi of the whole body from extending and emerging. The pulse is Deep and Fine or Wiry and Tight; the face is greasy like dust; there is no sweating, aversion to cold, cold extremities with stiffness, or cholera-like vomiting. Leng Xiang Yin Zi (Cold Fragrant Drink) is used.
Simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea with a faint pulse nearing extinction, or a deficient and floating pulse nearing dispersion, indicates a critical condition. Without Jiang Shui San (Plum Water Powder), rescue is impossible.
If exposed to Summerheat and latent Heat, drinking excessively, and indulging in raw and cold foods, leading to Cold damaging the Spleen and Stomach, with abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, indistinguishable food and water, and a Deep and Tight pulse, Da Shun San (Great Smooth Powder) is suitable.
