Li Pi (Yellow Orange Peel), also known as Huang Guo Pi (Yellow Fruit Peel). Pungent and bitter in flavor, warm in nature. Enters the Spleen, Lung, and Liver meridians. Its primary action is to direct Qi downward and broaden the middle jiao. It breaks up phlegm nodules in the elderly and is particularly effective for thick, glue-like phlegm. It resolves phlegm, calms wheezing, stops cough, and directs Qi downward; its efficacy surpasses that of Guang Chen Pi (Guangdong Tangerine Peel). In terms of tonifying the Stomach and harmonizing the Middle Jiao, its strength is inferior to Guang Chen Pi.
In the past, a man surnamed Li suffered from accumulated phlegm forming a nodule in the throat, resembling a plum-pit sensation. There was an obstruction in the throat, unable to be spat out or swallowed, feeling present yet absent, sometimes causing blockage. (Supplementary Note) According to this analysis, the condition arises from constrained Liver Qi and emotional stagnation due to worry and overthinking, forming a plum-pit sensation, which occasionally flares up upon exposure to wind or anger. The man surnamed Li suffered from this disease for over ten years without success from other medications. He was eventually cured using this prescription.
Li Pi (two qian, white pith removed), Tu Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae, two qian), Su Zi (Pericarpium Sesami Fructus, two qian), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis, one qian), Zhu Ye (Leaf of Bambusa, twenty leaves). Decoct in water and drink; it is effective.
