Yunxiang Cao (Artemisia argyi), also known as Wa'er Cao (Ear-picking Herb) and Maoye Yunxiang Cao (Hairy-leaf Yunxiang Cao), is further called Maoye Cao (Hairy-leaf Herb). Its flavor is bitter and slightly pungent, and its nature is cold. It belongs to the category of "Yang within Yin," with actions that can ascend and descend. It clears excess heat and pathogenic heat from all meridians, resolves wind-cold on the muscle surface, clears heat-toxin causing swelling and pain in the throat, treats toothache due to wind-fire, rheumatic tonsillitis (Ru'e), mumps (Parotid swelling), promotes pus discharge and resolution, and treats headache due to wind-cold, consumptive fever with bone-steaming sensation, pediatric convulsions due to infantile convulsion (Jingfeng), and opisthotonos (Jiaogong Fanzhang).
(Attached Formula) Treats various types of consumptive fever in men and women, characterized by aversion to cold in the afternoon, fever at night accompanied by irritability and thirst, cooling only after sweating at the fifth watch (early morning), soreness and weakness of the limbs, shortness of spirit, and loss of taste.
Prescription: Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 1 qian), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 qian), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 5 fen). Decoct in water, administer mixed with Tongbian (Urine of a healthy child). For Lao Sou (Consumptive cough), add Baibu (Stemonae Radix), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix). For loss of taste, add Huaishanyao (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Lianzi (Nelumbinis Semen), and Baifuling (Poria). For watery diarrhea, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma). For amenorrhea in virgins or women, add Sumu (Sappan Lignum) and Honghua (Carthami Flos).
(Another Formula) Treats headache and fever due to wind-cold.
Prescription: Yunxiang Cao (1 qian), Zisuye (Perillae Folium, 1 fen), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 3 fen), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 qian). Use Jiangpi (Zingiberis Pericarpium) as a guiding herb, decoct in water, and take orally.
(Another Formula) Treats pediatric exogenous rheumatic tonsillitis, parotid swelling with redness, pain, and hot nodules.
Prescription: Yunxiang Cao (2 qian), Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix, 1 qian), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 qian). Decoct in water, administer mixed with wine.
(Another Formula) Treats excess fire of the Yangming channel, gum swelling and pain, and dental caries/toothache due to wind-fire.
Prescription: Yunxiang Cao (3 qian), Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, 15 grains). Decoct in water for frequent gargling, or administer mixed with wine; alternatively, use the root and hold it against the teeth.
(Another Formula) Treats carbuncles and sores with redness and swelling; promotes rupture if pus is present, and resolution if no pus is present.
Prescription: Yunxiang Cao (as needed). Decoct in water, administer mixed with water-wine.
(Another Formula) Treats pediatric acute infantile convulsion, characterized by opisthotonos, convulsions, and kicking/shaking of hands and feet.
Prescription: Yunxiang Cao. Decoct in water, administer mixed with water-wine; or add Zhusha (Cinnabar, 1 fen) and Qiuyin (Lumbricus, 2 earthworms), then administer mixed with water-wine.
(Additional Note) This herb should not be used for slow infantile convulsion. Slow convulsion is caused by deficiency of Spleen Qi, where there is no wind to dispel and no phlegm to clear; thus, it is contraindicated.
