Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba) (2 qian), Bian Dou (Coicis Semen, fried) (2 qian), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) (2 qian), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried) (2 qian), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Mycelium) (3 qian), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) (1.5 qian). Decoct and take with Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) as an adjuvant.
Nan Su (Perillae Folium variant), with a pungent taste, is warm in nature. It is non-toxic. It treats fever from cold damage (Shanghan), absence of sweating, and headache, with miraculous efficacy.
This herb treats all wind-cold conditions, such as phlegm surging and congealing leading to cholera-like disorder with muscle cramps (Huanluan Zhuanjin), coughing with expectoration, pediatric wind disorders; it alleviates pain and relieves wheezing. The stem can tonify the center and benefit qi. The root can wash sores and dispel wind. The seed can open the appetite and strengthen the spleen. Used together with Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), it transforms phlegm and disperses wind; eating it as a vegetable for a long time makes one fair and plump.
Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), with a pungent and fragrant taste, is warm in nature. It enters the Spleen and Lung meridians. It induces sweating, resolves headaches due to wind-cold attack, calms wheezing and asthma, directs qi downward, expands the chest, reduces distension, and transforms phlegm.
Fu Su Zi San: Treats prolonged coughing in children where phlegm sounds in the throat resemble sawing, and other medications are ineffective; this formula yields good results. It is also effective for the elderly with prolonged coughing and wheezing.
Dosage: 3 qian for adults, 1 qian for children, taken with plain boiled water.
Cao (Herb unspecified in text), with a bitter taste, is slightly cold in nature. It has slight toxicity. It treats various wind-dampness disorders, characterized by the absence of six-channel (Liu Jing) syndromes internally, but externally presenting with hemiplegia, deviation of the mouth and eyes, abundant phlegm-qi obstruction, numbness of hands and feet, flaccidity and bi-syndrome with loss of sensation, bone and tendon pain, flowing dampness forming phlegm, paralysis and flaccidity, wind-dampness-phlegm-fire, vitiligo, and loss of eyebrows and beard. Quan Qin Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix variety), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are ground into powder, mixed into an ointment base, and formed into pills with refined honey. Take 3 qian per dose, administered warm with water and wine.
Discussion: This herb has slight toxicity. Gan Cao is used to harmonize the middle jiao and detoxify. Dang Gui and Shu Di Huang are used to nourish blood. Before treating wind-cold, one must first treat the blood; when the blood is calm, the wind extinguishes itself.
This herb (5 qian) is simmered in water and taken with water and wine.
