[Li Shizhen said] When used as medicine, wrap it in flour and roast until cooked. Grind off the rough skin, mash it thoroughly, and then grind it into a fine powder resembling flour before it is suitable for medicinal use. [An unnamed physician said] For every five liang of material, use half a fen of salt, place it together with flowing water from the east in a porcelain vessel, and boil for one fu shi (a traditional time unit, approx. 2 hours). Then crush and grind into powder. Further use ten liang each of Wuhua Pi (Bark of Five-Flower Tree), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), and Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), with flowing water from the east... [Zhu Zhenheng said] Use clam shells calcined into powder; do not use in decoctions. [Li Shizhen said] According to Wu Qiu: Whenever using Ge Fen (Clam Shell Powder), select clam shells with purple edges, calcine them over charcoal fire into powder, mash them together with mature Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) including seeds, form into dough balls, air-dry, and use. This method is most excellent.
[Ri Hua Zi said] Whenever using, select aged materials, calcine them over charcoal fire until red-hot, quench them three times with Mi Cu (Rice Vinegar) to eliminate "fire toxicity," and then grind into powder.
[An unnamed physician said] Whenever entering medicine, it must be calcined before use. [An unnamed physician said] When selecting, do not use shells of flower insects; although they look very similar, they are ineffective. Bei Zi (Concha Arcae) should be soaked relatively in honey and vinegar, steamed, taken out, rinsed with clear wine, and then ground.
[An unnamed physician said] Ke (shell-like medicinal materials) should be harvested in winter, selecting those that are white and greasy in texture, possessing white spiral water-wave patterns. Do not let them see fire, or they will lose efficacy. Whenever using, scrape off the powder with a copper knife, grind finely, sieve, and grind again a thousand times. It is not used in prescriptions for women.
[An unnamed physician said] When preparing, boil raw Mao Xiang (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus) together for half a day, then pound and sieve in a stone mortar. [Experience Prescription said] When preparing, use yellow mud... (original text has gaps, Song Chu, San Fu Ying, Xiang, Yan)
[Li Shizhen said] The sides are called Ya (teeth/gums), and the middle is called Chi (teeth). For medicinal use, burn them. The *Qian Shi Xiao Er Fang* states: "Use human teeth calcined to retain their nature. Add She Xiang (Moschus)... whether blue-purple or turned black, use shed human teeth, regardless of quantity. Seal tightly in a clay jar, calcine to remove fire toxicity, grind into powder, and use."
[Meng Shen said] In the twelfth lunar month, cut Dan Zhu (Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens), remove the green skin, insert into manure, soak until permeated, extract the juice. [Tao Hongjing said] Use an empty bottle with its mouth plugged, insert into manure, accumulate for years to obtain juice. It is very dark and bitter, named Huang Long Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction).
