[Lei Xue said] When used, soak in licorice water for one night, scrape off the black skin with a copper knife, break into four or five pieces. Soak again in licorice water overnight, steam from Si hour to Wei hour, then dry in the sun. Mix with wine and steam again, dry in the sun for use. [Meng Shen said] For medicinal use, it must be processed.
[Li Dangzhi said] After harvesting, finely chop together with roots, branches, stems, and leaves using a copper knife, dry in the shade for use. Do not expose to fire.
[Su Gong said] Cut bamboo into two chi lengths, split open. Place two bricks opposite each other, set the bamboo on top. Roast over fire to extract the bamboo sap, catch the dripping juice in a dish.
[Chen Cangqi said] Regarding honey refining: one jin of honey yields only twelve liang and a half. If the heat is insufficient or excessive, it cannot be used. [Li Shizhen said] For refining Sha Mi (sand honey), add four liang of water per jin, place in a silver or ceramic vessel, slowly refine over mulberry wood fire, skim off floating foam, until a drop forms a bead that does not disperse, then it is ready for use. This is called "water-fire refining."
[Lei Xue said] For using Ge Feng Ke (wasp nest/honeycomb), first steam mixed with Ya Dou Zhen (crow bean pillow) etc., from Si hour to Wei hour, remove the Ya Dou Zhen, dry in the sun for use. [Meng Shen said] For medicinal use, it should be roasted.
[Li Shizhen said] Use Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis) ground into coarse powder. For every jin of Wu Bei Zi, boil one liang of true tea in strong decoction, add four liang of fermented grain residue, mash and mix well, store in a vessel placed in a bran vat. Wait until it rises like dough, then it is formed. Shape into cakes or pills, dry in the sun for use. [Jia Mo said] For medicinal preparation of Bai Yao Jian (Fermented Galla Chinensis), pound ten jin of fresh Wu Bei Zi into fine powder, store in a porcelain jar, cover with rice straw, ferment for seven days and nights. Take out and pound again, add two liang each of Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) powders, ferment for another seven days and nights. Pound and ferment repeatedly, completing seven cycles, then take out, shape into cakes, and dry in the sun. If fresh material is unavailable, use dried material soaked in water. Another formula: One jin of Wu Bei Zi, one liang of raw glutinous rice (soaked in boiling water), one liang of fine tea. Grind all together into powder, seal in a jar, ferment for seven days in June, then take out and combine for use. Another formula: One jin of Wu Bei Zi (ground), half a jin of yeast, a handful of fine tea (ground). Mix evenly with Polygonum hydropiper juice, press tightly into a mortar, seal the top with long rice straw. Place another basket filled with rice straw, sit the mortar in the straw, cover with rice straw, and place in a clean area. After one seven-day period, if long frost/mold grows on the medicine, it is ready. Shape into pills or cakes, dry in the sun before storage and use.
