[Recorded in *Mingyi Bielu* (Additional Records of Famous Physicians)] Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case) grows on mulberry branches; it is the egg case of the mantis. It is harvested in the second and third lunar months, steamed, and then roasted over fire for use. If not processed this way, it may cause diarrhea.
[Recorded in *Mingyi Bielu* (Additional Records of Famous Physicians)] It grows in the flat marshes of Yingchuan. It is collected from dead specimens in the fourth lunar month. Do not allow it to become damp, as it will become toxic and unusable. [Tao Hongjing stated] When people raise silkworms... [text missing] ...the white ones are superior. For preparation, first soak it in rice washing water for one day until the secretion resembling snail slime floats on the surface. Then strain it out, dry it with mild heat, wipe off the yellow flesh, hairs, black mouthparts, and claws with a cloth, grind it into powder, and add to medicinal preparations.
[Li Shizhen stated] For preparation, remove the wings and legs, stir-fry with glutinous rice or flour until yellow, discard the rice/flour, and use.
[A physician stated] For the processing of Mylabris (Bānmáo), Mylabris phalerata (Yuánqīng), Ophryops (Tíngzhǎng), and Eupolyphaga (Dìdǎn), mix them with glutinous rice and small hemp seeds, stir-fry until the rice turns dark yellow/black, then remove. Discard the head, legs, and wings, wrap in human hair (Xuèyú), hang in the northeast corner overnight, and use the next morning to eliminate toxicity. [Meng Shen stated] For medicinal use, wings must be removed...
[Bao Sheng stated] After harvesting, store in bamboo tubes until dry, soak in rice washing water overnight, sun-dry, then fry in winter lard until dark yellow before use. [Zang Qi stated] When storing dried leeches, stretch their bodies fully. Remove those containing eggs. Leeches are extremely difficult to kill; even when roasted by fire, they resemble fish roe... [A physician stated] After harvesting and air-drying, stir-fry with glutinous rice until the rice turns dark black, then remove. Discard the rice, flesh/hairs around the mouth/body, and black dust. Cut into three or four pieces, grind into powder, and use. [Li Shizhen stated] Some prescriptions use dry grinding or fresh juice extraction, which do not strictly follow this rule.
[Li Shizhen stated] For using exuviae (shed skins), wash with boiling water to remove dirt, wings, and legs, boil in starch water, sun-dry, and use.
[Recorded in *Mingyi Bielu* (Additional Records of Famous Physicians)] Harvested on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, steamed and stored. Before use, roast over fire (after removing legs). Do not place in water, as it may induce vomiting.
