Secret Recipe of Spiritual Medicine
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary
In ancient times, our country's surgery was both proficient in anatomy and possessed spiritual medicines. Unfortunately, due to excessive secrecy, they were lost to the world. Thus, what secular physicians acquired were merely a few formulas such as Shengjiang (Ascending and Descending Cinnabar). This book was authored by Shichengzi from Pudong, revised and corrected by Fang Chengpei from Guxi, containing strange formulas and secret discussions unheard of by secular physicians. Shichengzi was a person of the Kangxi era. He studied various books in his youth and loved the teachings of Fuxi and Huangdi in his adulthood, thus favoring the Daoist path. He wandered the four seas and eventually met a enlightened master. Although he achieved Daoist success, his merit and deeds were insufficient. Therefore, he sold medicine in a pot to widely benefit all living beings, and compiled the "Secret Recipe of Spiritual Medicine". It was later obtained by the Fang family. The dosages in the book are all coded in hidden language; after careful study, they were corrected. It is as mysterious as the "Ghost Remnant Formula".
Preface to the Formulas
(The upper part is missing) Abandoned. However, since ancient times, alchemists have passed knowledge orally and refused to reveal it lightly. Thus, what secular physicians acquired were merely a few formulas like Hongsheng (Red Ascending) and Baijiang (White Descending). This volume of "Secret Recipe of Spiritual Medicine" contains more than forty formulas. Flipping through its strange formulas and secret discussions reveals what secular physicians have never heard of. In the early Kangxi era, there was an alchemist named Shichengzi from Pudong, whose identity is unknown. In the Ji Hai year of the Qianlong era, while casually visiting the market in Guangling, I obtained a scroll of medical formulas, which was handwritten by Shichengzi himself. Reading his preface, he stated that selling medicine in a pot was merely to benefit the people widely, aiding in the accumulation of three thousand merits. Yet, he cherished the secrets too much, using hidden language for dosages, such as calling one tael "Qi Liang" (Odd Tael) and three qian "Ren Qian" (Benevolent Qian), fearing others would know. I carefully studied and understood the meaning, correcting them. I sigh that this book benefits the world but has very few who know it. In the summer of the Gui Mao year, Wulai visited Hangan and showed it to Wang Sheng Yigong, who happily had it printed. He also compiled a volume of frequently verified formulas from colleagues and attached it at the end to spread it further. His heart to benefit the world is commendable, so I wrote this preface at the beginning. Fang Chengpei Yangsongshi from Tiandu inscribed.
Original Preface
The ancients said that the Way of Medicine connects with the Way of Immortality. At first, I doubted and dared not believe it, but now I know it is indeed true. I thought of Hua Tuo and Bian Que, who were not insufficient to control the past and present; Qibo, Leigong, and Guangchengzi, who were within my mind; Dong Feng and Han Kang, who were no different from human intentions. Yet, the signs of immortality were faintly visible, and the desire to move was already apparent. Herbal medicines are insufficient to achieve the power of turning back heaven. All things formed by the subtle combination of Yin and Yang essence have selections of spiritual medicines. Thus, exhausting the principles of Heaven closing and Earth opening, stillness specializing and movement planting, water ascending and fire descending, sun rising and moon receiving, one might say this body awaiting death can be made to live from death, survive from danger. Moreover, if my body is free from disease, why cannot taking it lead to longevity? Therefore, observing famous mountains, I sought the true man riding a white deer; personally seeking divine medicine, I looked for the Daoist riding a blue ox. Through furnace fire and ingestion, I practiced daily and had matters to attend to. Not obtaining it, I did not say the formula was ineffective; slightly obtaining it, I rashly relied on my technique being refined. Until meeting an enlightened master, I regretted previous errors, abandoning all I had learned to engage in the main principles of Golden Elixir. I feared my merit and deeds were insufficient to ascend to immortal companions. Thus, I lingered in rivers and lakes, wandered in cities, sold medicine in a pot, and benefited the world widely, merely hoping for three thousand deeds completed and eight hundred merits achieved, so that in future years I could rise up, pulling my household to fly to heaven; today lingering, I could stay young and return to youth. This is called the Way of Medicine connecting with the Way of Immortality. Although I have not seen every practitioner wanting to become an immortal, nor every learner of immortality becoming a Daoist, judging by emotion and reason, the principle is thus. I studied various books in my youth and loved the Way of Fuxi in my adulthood. With literary talent of seven steps and eight dou, I dared not boast to others; regarding the five metals and eight stones, I secretly studied in my heart, hoping to receive the three transmissions from the Heavenly River, to achieve the ten gifts of Master Tao. Alas, the Purple Mansion is distant, the Jade Pool far away. Without meeting the Advisor, I do not know the ashes at the bottom of Kunming Pool; without meeting Magu, I do not remember the waters before the Penglai Gate. Now, fortunately, the Master from Guanzhong, possessing great virtue and universal models, and Mr. Dongjiao, with clear expectations and daily rituals, have allowed Angelica dahurica to refine new Lingzhi, and why does medicine turn in the tripod? Cloud mother steamed into taro, and why does cloud arise in the pan? They have pointed and taught me. Respectfully accepting forty-eight formulas to universally benefit all living beings, although not like Manqian's peaches or Anqi's dates, the divine changes are almost comparable to the ranks of "Thousand Gold Formulas" and "Elbow Behind Hand". As for clear meridians and thorough understanding, one formula containing several, one book penetrating ten thousand powders, it is perhaps like all things sharing one Great Ultimate, each thing having its own Great Ultimate. Thus, I write this preface to await future learners.
Time: Spring, First Month, Human Day, Wu Xu Year of Kangxi. Shichengzi from Pudong, recorded at Guangling Study.

General Discussion on Spiritual Medicine
"Ling" (Spiritual/Sensitive) refers to the Primordial Qi of Heaven and Earth, condensed within, signifying divine and unpredictable changes. The ancients said: There are seventy-two kinds of furnace fires and twenty-four types of ingestion. All five metals and eight stones are collected and used one by one, truly showing that... Medicines of root grass and tree bark are not spiritual, but medicines of calcined metal and stone are spiritual. Why do worldly people not observe, only knowing the name of spiritual medicine but not its reality? Not only can they not promote the subtle and profound mysteries, but even if they hold to one formula, they must stick to one disease, thinking ancient doctors' medication was just so, never seeking additions and subtractions outside spiritual medicine, nor transformations within spiritual medicine, thereby forming erroneous views and clinging to them for life. Alas! This is specifically called dead medicine, what spirituality is there? Even more hateful is that, not hearing the name of spiritual medicine, nor learning about spiritual medicine affairs, they falsely claim that calcined metals and stones should not be taken lightly, causing patients to believe deeply without doubt, preferring to destroy their bodies rather than awaken. This is all harmed by these words. Little do they know that ancient prescriptions must surpass later ones. If calcined metals and stones should not be taken, why did the ancients list so many categories to mislead later generations? Yu Dao Shi Sui (Jade Guide Stone Marrow) and Liu An Yu Gao (Liu An's Residue Paste), are they not all calcined metals and stones? Changfang and Sicong, these gentlemen, were never mocked for this. It is evident that the efficacy of Ling lies in whether it is used skillfully or not, and whether it is used skillfully depends on whether the transmission is appropriate. Therefore, other formulas are sought by flavor, but spiritual medicine must be obtained through hands-on practice. Although it is the function of small elixirs, it is actually the head of large elixirs. Adapting to the heart, changing unpredictably, truly like a swimming dragon impossible to grasp, how can scholars ignore it because it is calcined metal and stone!
Ten Examples of Spiritual Medicine
1. Sealing Mouths: Others only know sealing with salt mud, thinking it is mixing salt water with mud. Little do they know it is two-in-one, one-in-two. When medicine enters the jar, first crush salt blocks,冲 with boiling water, then use salt water and thin mud to cover the lid. No need for paper strips. Apply mud around the lid edge to seal tightly, add beams and wrap tightly. Place charcoal fire on top. Use a brush dipped in salt water to sweep around once by once, about one finger thick. Then seal the rest with thin mud around the lid edge. It will never leak. Gypsum and Litharge are not suitable.
2. Solidifying Bottom: If medicine is little, the bottom can be thinly solidified; if medicine is much, the mud jar must be thicker externally. Make an iron bracket to hold the jar bottom, extending to half the jar height. Have two rings hooked onto the upper beam. Wrap the tail of the beam with iron wire downwards several times, then twist with small nails, ensuring tightness. Secure with small nails, apply mud silk on top.
3. Distinguishing Mercury: Gong (Mercury), people say Shuiyin (Quicksilver) is Gong. Not recognizing Shuiyin, it refers to what is sold in the market, whereas Gong is extracted from Cinnabar. All spiritual medicines should use Gong; those using Shuiyin do so for convenience. However, Shuiyin should not contain lead. White ones are good; greenish ones have flaws.
4. Extracting Gong: Use one Yangcheng jar, drill a small hole at the bottom. Use another jar separately, place it in water underground, dig a pit, align the jar mouth with the ground. Place the drilled jar upside down over the seam, seal firmly. Inside the jar, burn straw to ash retaining its nature, lay at the bottom. Gently place Cinnabar on top, seal firmly. Rub the lid until half an incense stick burns. Remove water, heat with charcoal below. Total three incense sticks, all using gentle fire. Stop when fire reaches half the jar.
5. Distinguishing Earth: Wo Liu (Japanese Sulfur): All sulfur used in spiritual medicine is Wo Liu, produced in foreign lands, slightly red ones are correct. Now everyone uses Tu Liu (Local Sulfur), which is fierce and damaging. If unavoidable, there is a method to deaden sulfur, never use raw sulfur.
6. Processing Sulfur: Tu Liu, regardless of amount, crush to bean size. First, boil in yellow mud water for one day. Second, boil in vinegar for one day. Third, boil in Platycladus orientalis leaf water for one day. Fourth, boil in duckweed water for one day. Fifth, boil in moss water for one day. Sixth, boil in radish water for one day. Seventh, boil in tofu slurry for one day. Eighth, boil in pig large intestine head water for one day. Ninth, boil in duck soup water for one day.
7. Furnace Techniques: The world transmits that Sheng and Jiang materials are sufficient, unaware of the Bridge Technique. Two jars stand side by side, with a bridge in the middle for ventilation. There is Heavy Embryo Technique, Horizontal Jar String Technique, One Jar First Ascend Then Descend Technique, One Jar First Descend Then Ascend Technique, One Jar Divided into Three or Four Layers Technique. Various rules cannot be enumerated, preserving the general idea here.
8. Fire Control: Ascending medicines rub the lid; descending medicines do not. This is normal. Also, ascending medicines not rubbed, only observing the medicinal properties inside. Fire may use gentle fire throughout, martial fire throughout, gentle within gentle, martial within martial throughout, half jar, covering head, red inside and out, etc., varying greatly, depending on the subtlety of application.
9. Colors: Ascending is red, descending is white. Everyone knows this, no need to discuss. There are ascending whites and blacks, rarely seen by people. There are greens, colors like needles, certainly different. Briefly listing a few to show the unfathomable creation in the furnace.
10. Preparing Spiritual Medicine: Truly should not be used lightly. Fire nature is too dry, must know preparation methods. Regardless of ingestion or external application, first boil in yellow mud for one or two days. Then hollow out a large white radish, put medicine inside, boil in water for one or two days. Then bury in earth for seven days. Then hang in a well, one chi above water, for seven days. Then boil in mung bean water and Licorice water for one day each. Wear on the body for half a month, effect is greater. For external application medicines, no need for this, just boiling in Licorice is sufficient. Baijiang (White Descending) medicine prepared according to law causes no severe pain, which is a wonder.
Among spiritual medicines, details and twists are numerous, hard to record fully. Specifically picking a few items to show complete work. This is indeed intimate hand-to-hand transmission, combined with unique secrets. Only those who truly master it can understand this.
Wu Qi Chao Yuan Dan (This pill taken mixed with other pills): Wo Liu 4.2 qian, Nan Qian (Southern Lead) 7.5 qian, Bei Qian (Northern Lead) 1 liang, Ci Huang (Orpiment) 3 qian, Xiong Huang (Realgar) 3 liang.
First melt Northern Lead, then Southern Lead, mix together, melt evenly, shape into a lamp-bowl style like the bottom of a Yangcheng jar. Place one inverted in the jar. Then place powder of Liu (Sulfur), Xiong (Realgar), Ci (Orpiment) on top. Cover with another jar, then seal. Heat with gentle fire for two incense sticks, martial fire for one and a half incense sticks. Wait for water in the bowl to boil, place millet grains in the bowl. When millet sinks to the bottom, it is ready. For the second rotation, add 2 qian each of Sulfur, Realgar, Orpiment. From third to ninth rotation, add 1 qian each of Sulfur, Orpiment, Realgar. Take medicine for use. In any internal or external pill/powder, add 3 qian of this spiritual medicine per jin and take. All medicines become spiritual. First rotation can also be used, but ninth rotation is better.
Jiu Zhuan Ling Sha Dan (This pill taken alone or added to pills, mainly resolves phlegm): Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) 8 liang, Wo Liu 1.5 liang.
First boil Cinnabar in dripping vinegar for one or two shichen (hours). Take out. Stir-fry Cinnabar with Wo Liu powder, frequently adding sulfur, stir-frying Cinnabar until black. Put in jar, seal. Rub lid: three parts gentle, two parts martial fire. About twelve bowls of water condensation. Cool, take medicine, scrape down. Stir-fry Cinnabar with sulfur until black again. If fire starts, spray with vinegar. Grind to powder. Put in jar, still using the bottom powder from previous firing as base, cover surface, seal, fire for five incense sticks. Repeat this process. Up to fifth rotation, all same. At sixth rotation, boil Cinnabar in vinegar, no sulfur. Stir-fry into jar, still cover with residue. Do not use large jar, only small jar, leave about three fingers space at top, seal. Fire for five incense sticks. Place cotton soaked in water on top of the bowl.
