Menstruation refers to the monthly occurrence. If it occurs earlier or later than expected, it is termed irregular menstruation. For women with irregular menstruation, moxibustion should be applied to Qihai (CV 6), along with Zhongji (CV 3). For women experiencing amenorrhea due to depletion of menstrual blood, moxibustion should be applied to Yaoshu (BL 28), which can lead to recovery.
Qihai (CV 6) (see Chapter on Labor Injury).
Zhongji (CV 3) (see Chapter on Hernia).
Yaoshu (BL 28) (see Chapter on Bi Syndrome).
The symptom of metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding) is largely caused by damage to both the Liver and Spleen. Since the Liver fails to store blood and the Spleen fails to control blood, menstrual blood suddenly gushes out. It is suitable to apply moxibustion to the acupoints Qihai (CV 6) and Dadun (LR 1).
Qihai (CV 6) (see Chapter on Labor Injury).
Dadun (LR 1) (see Chapter on Corpse-like Coma).
Ancients discussed leukorrhea based on five colors and differentiated treatments according to the five Zang organs. There is also a theory that red discharge belongs to Blood and white discharge belongs to Qi. In fact, leukorrhea fundamentally involves the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), as this vessel crosses horizontally around the waist like a belt, hence its name. The treatment method should involve applying several moxa cones to Guanyuan (CV 4).
Guanyuan (CV 4) (see Chapter on Heart and Abdominal Pain).
The cause of infertility in women lies in the injury to the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). If pathogens from the Three Causes (internal, external, and neither internal nor external) damage these vessels, symptoms such as irregular menstruation, spotting or metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea may occur. Alternatively, retained blood may accumulate in the uterus, or the uterus may be cold or hot, or excessive phlegm due to obesity may obstruct the uterus with fatty tissue, all of which prevent conception. Moxibustion on Zhongji (CV 3) is essential.
Zhongji (CV 3) (see Chapter on Hernia).
When menstrual flow occasionally occurs during pregnancy for several months, it is termed fetal leakage. This can result from physical overexertion causing injury, heat in the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), or Liver injury due to anger. Applying moxibustion to Guanyuan (CV 4) will stop the bleeding spontaneously.
Guanyuan (CV 4) (see Chapter on Heart and Abdominal Pain).
Postpartum conditions are too numerous to list completely; however, those requiring moxibustion are detailed here. If lochia (postpartum vaginal discharge) fails to exit, moxibustion on Zhongji (CV 3) is suitable. If lochia does not stop, moxibustion on Qihai (CV 6) or Guanyuan (CV 4) is suitable. Guanyuan (CV 4) and Zhongji (CV 3) are only one cun apart; one aims to promote circulation, while the other aims to stop bleeding. If the precision is not accurate, disasters will ensue simultaneously.
Zhongji (CV 3) (see Chapter on Hernia).
Qihai (CV 6) (see Chapter on Labor Injury).
Guanyuan (CV 4) (see Chapter on Heart and Abdominal Pain).
Retention of the placenta may be due to exhaustion of Qi and strength or obstruction by lochia, preventing its expulsion. When various herbal medicines prove ineffective, applying moxibustion to Zhongji (CV 3) will yield immediate results.
Zhongji (CV 3) (see Chapter on Hernia).
