(Mangxiao / Natrii Sulfas) Processed by water levigation (Shuifei), filtered through five layers of thick paper to remove the bottom sediment, dried in a pan, then ground into powder in a mortar for flexible use. Mangxiao is refined from Puxiao; those resembling wheat awns are called Mangxiao. Fire processing is its method of preparation. It is incompatible with Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) and Kucai, and fears Nuwan, Xingren, and Zhuye.
(Zhusha / Cinnabaris) Scrape off the yellow surface with a knife, grind into powder, boil together with Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), remove the Mudanpi, then take Shihui (Talcum), wash seven times with flowing water from the east, remove the bottom sediment, dry under the sun before use. Those white as congealed fat and soft and smooth are superior. Shiwei (Pyrrosiae Folium) acts as a guiding herb. It is incompatible with Zengqing and can constrain Xionghuang (Realgar).
(Xuanmingfen / Natrii Sulfas Depuratus) Grind into powder, perform water levigation three times with fresh drawn water, then dry in the sun. There are also methods involving fire calcination or water levigation. It is incompatible with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Songzhi (Pinus Resin), and fears Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), Chijiazhi (Fermented Sojae Semen Nigrum), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang, and Guongui (Cinnamomi Ramulus).
(Qingfen / Calomelas) Can be used as a decoction. Zhang Zhongjing only required it to be chewed/crushed (Ju), not ground into fine powder. It fears Mamudugong (a toxic insect).
(Shuiyin / Hydrargyrum) Used as a decoction, or calcined by fire and quenched in vinegar to make powder for external application to treat toxicity. Changshi (Calamine) acts as a guiding herb. When combined with Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), it treats stagnation of Qi in the heart. When combined with Tianxiong (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) and Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), it treats Huoluan (Cholera Morbus). It is incompatible with Jia, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Maijujiang, and fears Bianqing, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), and wine.
(Pishuang / Arsenic Trioxide) Calcined over charcoal fire until red-hot, quenched seven times in Tongbian (Child's Urine), washed with water, ground into powder, then subjected to water levigation and drying.
(Pishi / Realgar? Or Arsenic Stone context dependent) Calcined by fire until red-hot, quenched in rice vinegar, dried, and ground into flying powder. It fears vinegar.
(Hongqian / Human Blood Dry?) Select transparent, bright red, tender material, grind into flying dust, perform water levigation several times. It fears Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Woju (Lactuca Sativa), Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix), Huangqin, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Dijin (Polygoni Avicularis Herba), Kushen, Wujapi (Euodiae Fructus), Ziheche (Placenta Humana), Wuyeteng, Echangscao, Jichangcao, Ebushicao (Petasites Hybridus), Yuansanye, Zhi.
(Liuhuang / Sulfur) Grind into flying dust, used to kill parasites and promote blood circulation. Zengqing and Shitingzhi act as guiding herbs. It fears Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Puxiao, Iron, Vinegar, Heixi (Stibnite), Pork, Duck Juice, Yuguanzi (Phyllanthi Fructus), Sanghui, Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), Tianyan, Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shiwei, Qiaomai, Duzhou, Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Diyü, Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus), Bimazu (Ricini Semen), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Cansha (Bombyx Batryticatus), Ziheche, Bolengguang, Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Mabiancao (Verbenae Herba).
(Yan / Sal) Salt often contains impurities such as Fan (Alumen), Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), and Duanshi (Calcined Lime). For medicinal use, it must be dissolved in water, clarified, and the bottom sediment removed, then boiled and refined until white, which is considered good quality. Loulu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba) acts as a guiding herb.
(Zhusha / Cinnabaris) Do not use those obtained from grasses, old vermilion lacquer, processed by other drugs, taken from corpses, or half-raw/half-dead. Only use those produced in cinnabar mines, which have a slightly red color. After collection, store in a gourd to prevent loss. First, boil with Zibeitiankui (Basella Rubra) and Yejiaoteng (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis) natural juices for one "Fu" period (approx. 4 hours); their toxicity will naturally recede. If processing ten liang, use seven yi of each of the two juices, mix and boil sufficiently. It fears Cishi (Magnetitum), Pishi (Arsenic Trioxide), Heiqian (Lead), LiuHuang, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Fructus), Ziheche, Songzhi, Songye, Heye, Gujingcao, JinXingcao, Xuancacao, Xiakucao, Langdangzi, Yanlaiahong, Matixiang, Dujiolian, Shuicaigu, Wasong, Rendong (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos).
