(Crush into powder for use in pills; the contraindications during grinding are the same as those of Longgu [Fossilized Bones].)
(The fragrance of Moschus (She Xiang, 麝香) is divided into three grades. The first is called "Yixiang" (Relic Fragrance), which occurs when the musk deer's abdominal gland is full and closed; the deer rubs its gland against rocks with its hooves, causing vegetation within a one-li radius to wither and turn scorched yellow. If humans obtain this fragrance, its price equals that of pearls. The second is called "Xixiang" (Knee Fragrance), which is collected and highly usable. The third is called "Xinjie Xiang" (Heart-Knot Fragrance); it results from the deer being startled by dogs or beasts, causing its heart to rupture, leading to frantic running among herds. Subsequently, milk mixes with water and is collected by humans; upon breaking open, one sees blood flowing from the heart and coagulating with the spleen into a dry blood clot. If this scent can be smelled across a mountain stream early in the morning, it is considered an inferior grade of fragrance. Whenever using Moschus, it should be opened on the Zi day (11 PM - 1 AM), finely ground, and sifted before use. The "Dangmenzi" (crystals near the opening of the gland) is of the best quality. It must be separately ground before use. Avoid consuming garlic.)
(There are four types of Niuhuang [Calculus Bovis, 牛黄]: The first is "Shengshenhuan" (Living Spirit Gallstone), obtained through deception. The second is "Jiaohuang" (Horn Gallstone), taken from the horns. The third is "Xinhuan" (Heart Gallstone), identified after the cow dies of illness, then slaughtered and dissected; the gallbladder located in the heart contains bile resembling thick yellow sauce. Upon collection, it is immediately thrown into water, where it resembles crushed Tribulus seeds or beans, hard as imperial beads. The fourth is "Ganhuan" (Liver Gallstone); the cow has a lustrous body and blood-red eyes, often handled and admired, possessing a night-glowing quality that inspires fear, or it may be collected by others. Whenever using Niuhuang, it must first be individually pounded and finely ground into dust, wrapped in silk gauze, then further wrapped in tender yellow oxhide, and placed on the surface of a well, three to four chi below the water level, left overnight, and retrieved the next morning. Ginseng acts as its guiding herb; combined with Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) and Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), it benefits the ears and eyes; it is incompatible with Longgu, Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Changshan ( Dichroae Radix), and Feilian (Blatta Orientalis); it fears Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) and Ganqi (Dammar Resin).)
(Scrape off the shavings, grind them finely, and use.)
(Self-decocted Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao, 犀角) is superior; dissolving it in wine for administration is the best method, or dissolving it in a decoction of Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), and Sharen (Amomi Fructus). For use in pills, dissolve in wine or water, mix with honey, or stir-fry into bead-like shapes. Fire-processing enhances its efficacy; it is incompatible with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).)
(Those that are oil-green and bright enough to reflect images are authentic. Before use, soak them in pig lard overnight. The next day, roast them over willow wood fire until processed, then grind for use. Alternatively, stir-frying with Gefen (Meretrix Shell Powder) into bead-like shapes is convenient. Dioscorea (Shuyu) acts as its guiding herb; fire-processing enhances its efficacy; it is incompatible with Dahuang.)
(When collecting Ma Bai Jian [Equus Penis, 白马茎], select a silver-colored male horse without disease. During the spring mating season, choose males with strong vitality and power. Obtain them alive, then shade-dry for processing. One method involves cutting them into seven slices with a copper knife, steaming them mixed with fresh sheep blood for half a day, drying them, removing hairs and dried blood with coarse cloth, and finally chopping them into fragments for use.)
