(If purchased from the market, most are counterfeit. Skip the steps of stir-frying and grinding to an extremely fine powder; after decocting into a medicine, add it in, boil for two or three boils, then pour out.)
(Those with purple on both sides are home-grown and authentic.)
(Dragon Brain (Long Nao, 龙脑) produced in Suzhou is of good quality.)
(It is the bitter gourd (Ku Hu Lu, 苦壶卢). When used, it must have fine texture, be crystal clear and clean, without any opacity, otherwise it is toxic.)
(When using Purslane (Ma Chi Xian, 马齿苋), do not use those with large leaves, as they are not Purslane and do not contain mercury. Avoid eating with soft-shelled turtle, as consuming them together can cause "turtle biting human abdomen" syndrome, which is incurable.)
(Treating Lung Abscess (Fei Yong, 肺痈), commonly known as Houttuynia (Yu Xing Cao, 鱼腥草), which grows in shady places.)
(Those growing on mulberry or locust trees are of good quality; boiled as soup. Some are stored in jars and calcined over high fire to remove smoke but retain nature, then ground into powder for medicinal use.)
(When using Hair (Fa Gou, 发9), select hair cut from the crown of men aged twenty or above, who are free from disease and have a ruddy complexion. For use in pills, powders, and ointments, first soak in Sophora root water (Ku Shen Shui, 苦参水) overnight, drain, place in a bottle, calcine with fire until red hot, cool down, and grind for use.)
(White and non-fishy ones are of good quality.)
(Calcine before use in medicine.)
(Use absolutely dry ones, grind into powder, and take with boiling water. Also known as Jin Zhi (Jin Zhi, 金汁); those buried underground for many years are of good quality.)
(Urine from healthy, fat, white boys whose taste is not salty and color is snow-white is of good quality.)
(That from urinals is of good quality; calcine and grind finely.)
(Take urine from the middle near the genitals: women's urine for men, men's urine for women; or take the juice to drink, or burn to ash and take.)
(When using, rotten and foul-smelling ones are best. Take a piece about three fingers wide, cover with ash fire for one night until the foul smell disappears, then boil in a porcelain pot with fresh boy's urine for one shichen (two hours). Remove and place under the eaves, press into a pit one foot deep, place the bone inside for another shichen. The spirit of the medicine returns miraculously. Yang persons use Yin, Yin persons use Yang. Male bones are not red, female bones are red, distinguish by this. Another method: wash with Sandalwood Decoction (Tan Xiang Tang, 檀香汤), roast with butter, or calcine to retain nature.)
(Those submerged in wine and fermented are male fetuses. First-born fetuses weighing over fifteen taels: wash several times with wine until blood water is gone. Use silver hairpin to remove fascia, seal in a silver pot, add wine, steam over water for a day and night, or bake with mild or strong fire. Another method: rinse clean with rice washing water, steam in pig stomach until soft, mash into paste for medicine. Avoid iron.)
(Fine and broad grain indicates female bone; coarse and narrow grain indicates male bone. Five-colored bones are superior, white bones are medium, black bones are inferior, yellow bones are slightly better. Do not use bones from unclean menstrual flow or obtained by women. Wash clean, knead and grind into powder, extremely fine before adding to medicine for miraculous effect. However, when men take empty-stomach kidney-nourishing medicines, place round Dragon Bone (Long Gu, 龙骨) so its qi enters the Kidney Meridian. Lei Gong said use raw. One method: soak in wine overnight, bake dry, grind powder, water-classify three times. If urgent, boil in wine and bake dry. Or some say all medicines must be water-classified and sun-dried; for every jin, steam with one dou of black beans for one shichen, then sun-dry. Otherwise, it affects intestines and stomach, causing heat in old age. Good with Ginseng (Ren Shen, 人参), Realgar (Niu Huang, 牛黄 - *Note: Niu Huang usually refers to Calculus Bovis, Realgar is Shi Niao; assuming context implies Calculus Bovis based on common pairings, but text says Niu Huang*), Black Beans (Hei Dou, 黑豆). Feared by Gypsum (Shi Gao, 石膏) and Iron (Tie, 铁). Avoid fish.)
