*Yanyi* treats wind-phlegm surging upward and obstruction of qi mechanism.
Gleditsiae Fructus Spinosus (Zaojiao, 皂角) [roasted, 1 liang], Alum (Baifan, 白矾) [raw, 0.5 liang], Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) [0.5 qian].
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with water to take 1-2 qian by instillation; after a moment, phlegm will be vomited. Alum is used to separate and drain phlegm from below the diaphragm.
*Yijian Fang* Xixian San treats stroke causing flaccidity of the four limbs, surging phlegm, blockage in the chest/diaphragm, and closed obstruction of qi.
Alumen (Jinfan, 晋矾) [2 liang], Ziziphi Spinosae Fructus (Zhuya Zaojiao, 猪牙皂角).
Grind the above into fine powder, take 1-2 qian per dose, mixed with warm water for oral administration.
*Baojian* Fenyan San treats stroke with surging phlegm producing sounds, locked jaw (Koujin, 口噤), and convulsions of the hands and feet.
Agastis Herba (Huoxiang, 藿香), Dry Scorpion (Ganxie, 干蝎), Typhonii Rhizoma Praeparatum (Baifu, 白附), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing, 南星), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), Hydrargyri Oxydum Rubrum (Nifen, 腻粉), Calomel (Fenshuang, 粉霜) [each 2 liang].
Grind and mix evenly, take 1-2 qian per dose, mixed with mint decoction. If vomiting or diarrhea has not occurred, administer again.
For the above methods: Sun-dry the leaves of *Perilla frutescens* (Er Ye, 耳叶), grind into powder, mix with wine to take one *cunbi* (方寸匕, a measuring spoon), three times daily. If vomiting and reflux occur, mix with honey to make pills, take ten pills per dose (equivalent to one *cunbi* of the previous liquid form), three times daily.
*Jisheng Fang* Xixian Wan
Harvest the leaves of Siegesbeckia Herba (Xixian Cao, 稀莶草) on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month or the sixth day of the sixth lunar month. Steam nine times and sun-dry nine times. For each steaming, sprinkle with wine and honey, then sun-dry. Grind into powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take on an empty stomach with wine.
Take seven Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆), remove the skin, pound into a paste. Apply to the left palm, and apply to the right palm (or vice versa). Place a cup of warm water over the palm. After a moment, symptoms will normalize. Wash off the medicine and frequently flex and extend the fingers.
*Xuanming Lun* Fangfeng Tianma San treats wind-induced numbness, migrating pain, joint pain, hemiplegia due to stroke, or sudden aphasia (Bao Yin, 暴喑). It also treats dizziness caused by internal and external wind-heat stagnation. This formula is commonly used in the northwest regions and is similar to the following formula.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Xiao Chuanwu, 小川乌), Typhonii Rhizoma Praeparatum (Baifuzi, 白附子), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie Sui, 荆芥穗), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活) [each 0.5 liang], Talcum (Huashi, 滑石) [2 liang].
Grind the above into powder. Mix with hot wine and a little honey, take half a qian, gradually increasing to one qian. The dosage should be sufficient until a slight sensation of numbness is felt as the medicine circulates. Alternatively, make honey pills the size of a bullet. Dissolve one or half a pill in hot wine, or dissolve in plain boiled water.
*Jingyan Fang* Rusheng San treats stroke with body numbness, unsteady gait, vertigo, headache, trismus (Yaguan Jinji, 牙关紧急), convulsions of hands and feet, surging phlegm, mental confusion, as well as tetanus (Poshang Feng, 破伤风) and other syndromes.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) [1 jin], Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) [8 liang], Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛) [4 liang], Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) [8 liang], Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu, 草乌) [4 liang], Aconiti Carmineli Radix (Chuanwu, 川乌) [5 liang], Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻) [2 liang].
Grind the above into powder. Take half a qian or one qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Tea infusion is also acceptable. If bitten by mad dogs, snakes, scorpions, etc., first rinse the wound with grain wash water, then apply this powder externally and take it internally until effective. For traumatic wounds with continuous bleeding, application stops bleeding immediately.
