Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction)
See "Re Men" chapter for the formula.
Commentary: The original intention of this formula is to point out that individuals with Spleen-Stomach deficiency, due to irregular diet and overexertion, suffer from hyperactive Heart Fire, which then attacks the Earth element (Spleen-Stomach). Secondly, when Lung Qi is invaded by pathogenic factors, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) should be used as the sovereign drug, with Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Gancao (Licorice Radix) as minister drugs. Since Spleen-Stomach deficiency leads to prior damage to Lung Qi, Huangqi is used to benefit the skin and hair and consolidate the interstices, preventing spontaneous sweating, asthma, and shortness of breath, thereby protecting Yuan Qi (Original Qi); Renshen is used to tonify Yuan Qi; Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Radix) uses its sweet-warm nature to clear heat fire and tonify the Yuan Qi in the Spleen-Stomach. If there is acute Spleen-Stomach pain, abdominal distension, and a sensation of tightness or contraction, this formula should be used in larger doses. The *Neijing* states: "For tension, use soothing methods." Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), with bitter, sweet, and warm properties, clears heat in the Stomach and unblocks blood in the waist and umbilical region. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) guide the clear Qi of the Stomach upwards. They guide the sweet-warm aroma of Huangqi and Gancao upwards, replenishing the dispersion of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) and solidifying the exterior. Simultaneously, they relieve the contraction of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel). These two herbs are bitter and neutral, with thin aromas, belonging to Yang within Yin, guiding Clear Qi upwards. If Qi mechanism is chaotic in the chest, causing interference between Clear and Turbid Qi, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) is used to regulate it; it also assists Yang Qi in rising to dissipate stagnant Qi, assisting other sweet and acrid drugs. Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency fails to rise and float, damaged by Yin Fire affecting the generating Qi. Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood) is severely depleted, and Ying Qi cannot nourish the body. Yin Fire flares up, indicating latent fire in the blood, gradually simmering and reducing Qi and Blood day by day. The Heart governs Blood; when Blood decreases, the Heart lacks nourishment, leading to mental confusion and irritability. This condition is called "Fan" (Irritability/Restlessness), meaning inner confusion and restless discomfort. Therefore, acrid, sweet, and slightly warm agents are added to generate Yang Qi. When Yang Qi is robust, it generates Yin Blood, harmonized with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). A small amount of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) is added to rescue Kidney Water, clearing latent fire in the Yin aspect. If irritability persists, a small amount of Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) is added to tonify Kidney Water; when Water is abundant, Heart Fire naturally subsides. If Qi floats chaotically disturbing the mind, Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming the Spirit Pill) is used to settle and secure the mind, leading to recovery.
An Shen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill)
See "Re Men" chapter for the formula.
Headache: Add Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora) 3 fen; if pain is severe, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 5 fen; for vertex or brain pain, add Gaoben (Ligustici Jingwei Rhizoma) 5 fen and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3 fen. These four herbs can be used for various headaches. If headache is accompanied by phlegm-dampness, heaviness, and lethargy, it is Taiyin Jue Headache; add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 0.5 qian and Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 fen.
Tinnitus, yellow eyes, swelling of cheeks and jaw, pain in the neck and outer posterior elbow/arm, red face, and surging pulse: Use Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 7 fen, Gancao 5 fen, and Gaoben 7 fen to unblock meridians and blood; add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 3 fen and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 fen to reduce swelling; add Renshen 5 fen and Huangqi 7 fen to tonify Yuan Qi and drain fire.
Throat pain, jaw swelling, surging pulse, red face: Add Huangqin 3 fen, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 7 fen, and Gancao 3 fen. For dry mouth and throat, add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 5 fen to guide Stomach Qi upward to moisten.
Fullness and stuffiness below the heart: Add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Huanglian each 1 qian. If fullness is accompanied by abdominal distension, add Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) 3 fen, Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 7 fen, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 3 fen, and Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 3 fen. If cold weather, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) slightly.
Fullness below the heart with a sensation of cold in the center: Add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Huanglian each 1 qian. Inability to eat with fullness below the heart: Add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Chenpi each 1 qian. Ability to eat but with fullness below the heart: Add Huanglian 0.5 fen and Zhishi 3 fen. Slow pulse with phlegm and fullness: Add Banxia and Huanglian each 1 qian.
Abdominal pain: Add Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 0.5 qian and Gancao 3 fen. If aversion to cold and cold pain: Add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 0.5 qian. Summer abdominal pain without aversion to cold or heat: Add Huangqin 5 fen, Shaoyao 1 qian, and Gancao 5 fen to treat seasonal heat.
Abdominal pain during cold seasons: Add Banxia, Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), etc.
Hypochondriac pain or contraction/tightness: Add Chaihu.
Supra-umbilical pain: Add Zhen Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 0.5 qian. If cold: Add Rougui 0.5 qian.
Sheng Yang San Huo Tang (Raise Yang and Disperse Fire Decoction)
See "Huo Men" chapter for the formula.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonify Blood Decoction)
See "Re Men" chapter for the formula.
Sheng Yang Shun Qi Tang (Raise Yang and Smooth Qi Decoction)
Treats injury from irregular diet and overwork, causing abdominal and hypochondriac fullness/stuffiness and shortness of breath. In spring, taste is bland; in summer, despite heat, there is still cold sensation. Hunger feels like satiety; dislikes cold food.
Formula: Shengma, Chaihu (each 1 qian), Huangqi (1 liang), Banxia (3 qian), Zhi Gancao (0.5 qian), Chenpi (1 qian), Renshen (3 qian), Shenqu (Stir-fried, 1 qian), Danggui Shen (1 qian), Huangbai (0.5 qian), Caodoukou Ren (2 qian).
Crush the above. Take 3 qian or half a liang, decoct in water with 3 slices of fresh ginger.
Commentary: For Spleen-Stomach insufficiency, Shengma and Chaihu must be used. These are bitter and neutral, with thin aromas, belonging to Yang within Yin. They guide the Clear Qi of the Spleen-Stomach into the Yang pathways and the generating Qi of all meridians, nourishing the harmony of Spring Qi. They also guide the sweet-warm aroma of Huangqi, Renshen, and Gancao upward to fill the interstices, allowing Yang Qi to protect the exterior and remain secure. Most medicines treating Spleen-Stomach are named for raising Yang and tonifying Qi for this reason.
Sheng Yang Bu Qi Tang (Raise Yang and Tonify Qi Decoction)
Treats irregular diet, alternating hunger and fullness, and overwork, leading to insufficient Stomach Qi and sinking Spleen Qi. Symptoms include shortness of breath and weakness, intolerance to cold and heat. After breakfast, dizziness and stuffiness increase, requiring sleep. Limbs are lax and unreceptive, lethargic. Five-center heat upon movement.
Formula: Shengma, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng, Baishao, Zexie, Zhi Gancao (each 1 qian), Zhi Houpo (0.5 qian), Chaihu (2.5 qian), Shengdihuang (1.5 qian).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 5 qian, decoct in water with 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes. If abdominal distension and chest tightness occur, add Houpo. If abdomen feels hard, add Sharen 3 fen.
Commentary: This formula uses ascending and floating drugs to support Stomach Qi, suppress Liver, and clear Spleen dampness.
Shen Zhu Tiao Zhong Tang (Ginseng and Atractylodes Regulate the Middle Decoction)
Clears heat, tonifies Qi, stops cough, calms asthma, harmonizes Spleen-Stomach, and promotes appetite.
Formula: Huangqi (4 fen), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Cortex) (5 fen), Renshen, Zhi Gancao, Baifuling (Poria) (each 3 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (20 pieces), Baizhu (3 fen), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) (2 fen), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (2 fen), Chenpi (2 fen), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Imperforatus) (1 fen).
Crush. One dose, decoct in water, take warm. Avoid excessive talking and work after morning meal.
Commentary: The *Neijing* states: "For diseases of the Fire position, purgation is done with sweet substances." Huangqi is sweet and warm, clearing heat and tonifying Qi. Sangbaipi is bitter and slightly cold, draining Lung Fire and calming asthma, thus serving as Sovereign. The Lung desires astringency; sour foods astringe quickly. Wuweizi's sourness astringes scattered Qi and stops cough. Spleen-Stomach insufficiency is tonified with sweet substances. Baizhu, Renshen, and Zhi Gancao are bitter-sweet and warm, tonifying Spleen and moderating the middle, serving as Ministers. Digupi is bitter and slightly cold, resolving muscular heat. Fuling is sweet and neutral, descending Lung Fire. Maidong is sweet and slightly cold, preserving Lung Qi, serving as Assistants. Qingpi and Chenpi are bitter-acrid and warm, dispersing stagnation in the chest, serving as Envoys.
Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang (Raise Yang and Benefit Stomach Decoction)
Treats Spleen-Stomach deficiency causing lethargy and propensity to sleep, limbs lax and unreceptive. During autumn dryness, when damp-heat recedes, body weight increases, joint pain occurs, mouth and tongue are dry, taste is absent, bowel movements are irregular, urination is frequent, and digestion is impaired. Accompanied by Lung symptoms: chills, depression, facial disharmony, due to Yang Qi failing to extend. Hence named Raise Yang and Benefit Stomach Decoction.
Formula: Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng (each 0.5 liang; since Autumn Metal is prosperous, acrid-warm drugs are used to drain it), Chaihu, Baizhu, Fuling (omit if thirsty), Zexie (each 3 qian), Huangqi (2 liang), Renshen, Banxia, Zhi Gancao (each 1 liang), Huanglian (1 qian), Chenpi (4 qian), Baishao (5 qian). Why use Renshen, Baizhu, Baishao when Autumn is prosperous? Because Spleen-Stomach deficiency affects the Lung, so tonifying according to the season facilitates efficacy.
Crush. Take 3 qian, decoct in water with ginger and jujube, take warm after morning meal, or up to 0.5 liang. If urination clears but disease worsens, diuresis is inappropriate; remove Fuling and Zexie. If appetite returns, do not overeat on the first one or two days to avoid re-injuring Stomach Qi, as medicinal power is weak and Stomach Qi cannot transport and ascend. Eat light flavors or nutritious food to assist medicinal power and nourish Stomach Qi. Do not eat bland food to weaken strength and aid pathogenic sinking. Light physical activity helps Stomach and medicine transport and ascend. Avoid heavy labor. Let Spleen-Stomach rest. If Stomach Qi strengthens, eat less fruit to assist grain medicine. Classics say: "Five grains nourish, five fruits assist."
Shuang He San (Double Harmony Powder)
Tonifies Blood and Qi, treats consumptive fatigue and weakness.
Formula: Huangqi, Chuanxiong, Danggui, Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1 liang), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Zhi Gancao (each 0.75 qian), Baishao (2.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 4 qian with ginger and jujube, decoct in 4 cups of water, take warm.
Commentary: For consumptive fatigue and Qi deficiency after major illness, this formula regulates. It is neither hot nor cold, gentle and sufficient.
Tiao Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Regulate Middle and Augment Qi Decoction)
Pulse is wiry, surging, slow, and choppy at deep pressure. Symptoms: limb fullness and blockage, joint pain, difficulty bending/extending, heavy body, vexation, instability, fluctuating weight, limb lethargy, loss of taste, frequent clear urination/defecation, upper drinking/lower diarrhea, or constipation. Summer loose stools with undigested food, or blood/pus after stool. Chest fullness, shortness of breath, throat obstruction, desire to lie down and sleep, weakness, anorexia.
Formula: Shengma (2 fen), Huangqi (1 qian), Gancao (0.5 qian), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (4 fen), Muxiang (1 fen), Renshen (5 fen), Chaihu, Jupi (Tangerine Peel) (each 2 fen).
Crush. One dose, decoct in water, take hot before meals.
If heat/restlessness appears, it is Lower Yuan Yin Fire steaming; add Shengdihuang and Huangbai. If defecation is deficient/blocking or incomplete with abdominal urgency, it is Blood deficiency/stasis; add Danggui Shen.
Baizhu He Wei Wan (Atractylodes Harmonize Stomach Pill)
Treats prolonged illness with inability to eat, where organs are either knotted or loose, due to weak Stomach Qi. Regular use harmonizes middle, regulates Qi, resolves phlegm, removes dampness, harmonizes Spleen-Stomach, and promotes appetite.
Formula: Zhi Houpo, Banxia (each 1 liang), Baizhu (1.2 liang), Chenpi (8 qian), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Zhishi (each 2.5 qian), Muxiang (1 qian), Renshen (7 qian), Zhi Gancao (3 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Soak steamed biscuit in fresh ginger juice, make pills like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills with warm water after meals.

Grind into fine powder. Soak in soup, steam, make pills like paulownia seeds. Take 30-40 pills with warm rice drink after meals.
Houpo Wen Zhong Tang (Magnolia Warm Middle Decoction)

Note: This treats Kidney and Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold. Commentary: Errors in treating Spleen-Stomach or misuse of purgatives, followed by seasonal cold, cause cold extremities and cardiac/gastric绞痛 with cold sweat. *Ju Tong Lun* says: Cold qi invades five zang, reversal causes upper leakage, Yang has not entered, so sudden pain and unconsciousness occur; life returns when Qi recovers. Among six qi excesses, only Cold toxicity is heaviest, as Yin governs killing. Sages use acrid-hot to disperse and restore Yang. Thus, "Cold qi invading, getting warmth stops pain immediately."

Modify previous formula: Remove Huangqin, Cangzhu, Baizhu, Yizhiren. Add Caodoukou, Huangbai, Shenqu, Shengjiang. Commentary: Verified methods can be understood intuitively; applying them broadly is inexhaustible. I suffered long-term Spleen-Stomach decline, partial loss of hearing/vision. Yin attacked Yang, Qi was short, spirit insufficient, pulse wiry—all indicate Yang deficiency hiding in Yin. In Gui Mao year, June-July, continuous rain/cold for over a month. Many had dysentery/diarrhea due to dampness causing five types of diarrhea. One day, heavy body/joint pain, three episodes of diarrhea, urinary obstruction. Reflecting on *Neijing*: "Those below, draw and exhaust," implying promoting urination first. Treating diarrhea with urinary difficulty requires separating fluids. Treating dampness without promoting urination is incorrect; bland-draining agents are indicated. Sage's methods are in texts, but intuition fills gaps. Guest cold-damp enters from outside to inside violently. Using bland-draining agents might cure quickly, but repeated draining benefits Yin and depletes Yang further, weakening Yang and spirit, strengthening Yin. Thus, raising-Yang drugs are appropriate. Qianghuo, Duhuo, Shengma (each 1 qian), Fangfeng (0.5 qian), Zhi Gancao (0.5 qian). One dose cured. Great Method: "For cold-damp excess, assist with Wind to level it." Also: "Those below, lift them." Recovery due to Yang rising, straightening the crooked. Sage's methods allow analogy; knowing one implies knowing hundreds.
