Wang Yinjun discussed: Regarding phlegm syndromes, ancient and modern medical texts are not detailed. Although Fangshu (medical formularies) have distinctions such as Five Drinks (Wu Yin) and various types of phlegm, people do not know that they are the source of disease. Some manifest as Head Wind (Tou Feng), dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus; some manifest as twitching of the mouth and eyes, itching of the brow bone and ear lobes; some pain, some wandering wind swelling in the four limbs, hard and seeming painful but not truly painful; some manifest as itching and pain in the teeth and cheeks, floating teeth with varying pain and itch; some belching and acid regurgitation, epigastric restlessness or pain; some hiccups; some throat obstruction, unable to expectorate or swallow. The phlegm resembles ink, or like broken cotton wadding, glue, or clam meat. Some feel ice or iron stopped in the epigastrium, cold pain of Heart Qi; some have strange dreams; some have soreness and weakness in the ankles, sudden pain in the lower back, kidneys, and joints; some have pain in the tendons and bones of the four limbs that is indescribable and has no fixed location; even hand numbness and arm pain resembling Wind-Dampness; some have a line-like cold sensation rising daily along the spine; some have whole-body pruritus as if lying on thorns; some have sticky wet itchy eyes, oral ulcers, tongue sores, throat bi (obstruction); some have cervical lymphadenopathy resembling Scrofula (Luo Li); some have two qi streams knotting in the chest and abdomen, causing dysphagia, oppression, and heat rushing to the head and face like smoke and fire; some become manic due to loss of will; some suffer from stroke and paralysis; some have chronic consumption diseases; some have Hongxiangjiao (gouty arthritis); some have palpitations in the epigastrium as if fearing capture; some have wheezing, coughing, and vomiting; some vomit cold saliva, green water, black juice, leading to Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), intestinal toxicity, pus in stool, contracture, and lameness. In short, internal and external diseases, in all their varieties, are caused by phlegm. Their manifestations differ and cannot be fully described. Since body fluids congeal into phlegm and no longer circulate to moisten the Triple Burner (San Jiao), symptoms such as dry mouth and throat, constipation, a face like withered bone, and brittle hair appear. Women may experience amenorrhea due to this. If the stale phlegm is expelled, natural medication will be effective. I once used a formula called Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) to cure countless diseases, which I now specially transmit to the world.
Mai Jing (Pulse Classic) states: When a patient's one arm is paralyzed and the condition shifts to the other arm, and the pulse is deep and fine, it is not Wind (Feng). There must be Fluid Retention (Yin) in the Upper Jiao.
Huo Ren Shu (Book of Vitality) states: Phlegm in Zhongwan (CV12) can also cause aversion to cold, fever, aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, and fullness in the chest and diaphragm. These symptoms resemble Taiyang Disease (Shanghan), differing only in the absence of headache and neck stiffness.
According to the described syndromes, eight or nine out of ten patients exhibit them, showing that phlegm causes many diseases. Why? Human Qi and Blood flow without a moment's interruption. Once there is stagnation, body fluids condense and close off,郁 (stagnate) and generate Heat, causing Phlegm to arise. Can people always adhere to proper measures regarding the Six Evils (Liu Yin), Seven Emotions (Qi Qing), diet, and daily life without any stagnation? Therefore, I specifically cite two passages from Mai Jing and Huo Ren Shu to prove that Wang Yinjun's theory has a basis. However, his single formula, Gun Tan Wan, cannot universally treat all diseases.
