According to *Yizong Xinfa* (Medical Master's Heart Methods): Zhongwan abscess (Abscess at the Zhongwan point), also known as Wei ju (Stomach carbuncle), originates below the heart and chest, four cun above the umbilicus, belonging to the Ren Mai meridian (Conception Vessel). (This location corresponds to the Zhongwan acupoint CV12.) It presents as chronic dull pain, externally developing into a carbuncle; the swelling is hard and diffuse, with skin color not red and no heat sensation. This condition arises from excessive consumption of roasted or grilled foods, leading to the accumulation of fire-toxin in the stomach fu-organ. If the Renying pulse (Human Welcome pulse, located on the carotid artery) is vigorous, it indicates that toxin qi is attacking the interior; symptoms such as vomiting, inability to eat, and coughing up purulent sputum are considered adverse prognoses (ni zheng).
According to *Yizong Xinfa*: He abscess (He carbuncle) is formed by the coagulation of fire resulting from emotional stagnation. It develops three cun above the previous point, belonging to the Ren Mai meridian. (This location corresponds to the Jianli acupoint CV11.) Initially resembling a millet seed, it involves both sores and carbuncles, with rapid swelling. It is accompanied by alternating chills and fever. In severe cases, it causes hiccups and dry heaving that radiate pain to the umbilicus. Initially slightly red, the lesion has a sharp apex and a constricted base, gradually turning crimson. The pain comes and goes. Pus formation around the fourteenth day is auspicious.
Feng Luzhan stated: The umbilicus is the root of the body; protection against wind-dampness must be strict. Any negligence leads to umbilical swelling and failure to dry. Over time, this may induce convulsions, allowing pathogens to enter the meridians, resulting in wind epilepsy (Feng xian). Conditions such as mouth-closing syndrome (Cuo kou) and umbilical wind (Qi feng) are all malignant conditions (E hou). (From *Jinnang*)
He further stated: If the umbilicus remains wet and continuously discharges greenish-yellow fluid, it is certain that there was injury to the six fu-organs at birth. It is appropriate to apply medicinal powder. However, at this stage, the lesion resembles only a blood clot; one must not use plasters containing Borneol (Bingpian) or Musk (Shexiang). One must also avoid formulas that are excessively cold or hot, because the infant's muscles are not yet firm, and the zang-fu organs are tender and fragile, making them unable to withstand harsh medicinal properties.
Empirical Formula (from *Leigong*): Stir-fry Plantago seeds (Cheqianzi) until charred, grind into powder, and apply to the area to promote drying.
Another formula (from *Jinnang*): Burn red wool (Dahong yangrong) to ash, grind into powder, and apply alone.
Another formula (from *Qixuan*): Mix ash from straw paper with calcined alum (Kufan), grind finely, and sprinkle on the wound. Wrap with paper to prevent urine from wetting it.
Another formula (from *Qianjin Fang*): Burn tangled hair (Luanshi) to ash and apply.
Another formula: Apply Phellodendron bark powder (Huangbai mo).
Another formula (from *Qianjin Fang*): Calcined alum (Wu qian), Dragon bone (Longgu), Lead oxide (Huandan) (each 1 qian), and Musk (Shexiang) (a small amount). Grind finely and apply.
For cases where the umbilicus is ulcerated internally, discharging fluid incessantly, indicating critical danger (Zhang's repeatedly verified formula): Grind Red halloysite (Chishizhi) into powder and apply to the site for immediate cure.
Another formula: White alum (Baifan) and White dragon bone (Bailonggu) (equal parts). Grind finely and sprinkle.
Another formula: Apply ash from cotton seeds (Mianhuazi).
Another formula: Equal parts of refined alum (Mingfan) and calcined alum (Kufan), ground and applied.
Secret recipe: Grind Cuttlebone (Haipiaoxiao) into fine powder and apply dry.
