冯鲁瞻曰∶凡小儿落胎之时,视其脐软者,无脐风也。如脐硬直者,定有脐风。

Luo Qian'an stated: Within seven days after birth, if an infant presents with abdominal distension and hardness, edema around the umbilicus, mouth contraction with furrowed brows, and trismus (lockjaw), it is named "Umbilical Wind with Mouth Pinching Syndrome" (Qifeng Cuokou Zheng). This occurs because the umbilical cord was cut too short or bound loosely, allowing dampness to soak into the umbilicus. External wind pathogens enter through the deficiency, transmitting to the Heart, where they accumulate. Subsequently, they transmit to the Spleen collaterals, manifesting as a stiff tongue, cyanotic lips, slight convulsions of the hands and feet, and phlegm rales in the throat; these are the signs of the condition. Administering a small amount of Yanshou Dan (Longevity Pill) will lead to recovery. If the spirit dissipates and the limbs become cold, it is incurable.
He further stated: Mouth pinching with frothy saliva, abdominal hardness with head deviation, convulsive hand clenching, umbilical eversion with silent crying—these originate from wind invasion during umbilical cord cutting. There is a tendon in the lower abdomen that runs straight up to the umbilicus. If this tendon reaches the umbilicus, there is no cure, and umbilical eversion is untreatable. However, if the tendon has not yet reached the umbilicus, urgent moxibustion with fire-lamp should be applied: three applications at Baihui GV20, seven at Qimen CV13 (or specific umbilical point), four on the thumb area, and seven at Yongquan KI1. If the straight tendon can be blocked before reaching the umbilicus, rescue is possible. If the umbilicus has not yet everted, one application at Shenmen PC7 is sufficient. (From *Tuina Secret Book*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Upon delivery, if the infant's umbilicus is soft, Umbilical Wind will not occur. If the umbilicus is hard and straight, Umbilical Wind is certain. One must inspect the umbilicus; if white vesicles are present, they should be gently pricked with a silver needle. If blood appears, recovery is possible. However, in the most critical cases, only one or two out of ten survive; survival until one month (one lunar cycle) indicates recovery. It is crucial to observe facial color and demeanor carefully, avoiding rash actions. For instance, a red forehead indicates Heart Heat; a red nose indicates Lung Heat; a bluish left cheek indicates Liver Excess; a pale right cheek indicates Spleen Deficiency; and pale cheeks indicate Kidney Deficiency. (From *Jinnang*)
He also stated: Heat stagnating in the chest, causing the infant to extend the neck and breathe forcefully, can also lead to umbilical swelling.
Lei Gong stated: When an infant's umbilicus protrudes by half a cun, it is due to vigorous Qi failing to consolidate. If not urgently stabilized, it often transforms into opisthotonos (arched back syndrome).
Er Dou San (Two Bean Powder) (from *Jinnang*) treats umbilical protrusion and swelling.
Arisaema Cum Bile (Tiannanxing, peeled and core removed), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou), Fermented Soybean (Dandouchi) (each 1 qian).
Grind into powder. Mix with natural juice of Banana Stem (Bajiao) and apply around the umbilicus. Recovery occurs when urination becomes normal.
Another prescription (from *Lei Gong*):
Poria (Baifuling), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi) (each 1 qian); Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Tongcao (each 3 fen); Licorice Root (Gancao) (2 qian).
Decoct in water and administer orally. One dose brings relief.
For Umbilical Swelling: First wash with a decoction of Schizonepeta (Jingjie). Then, take a scallion leaf, roast it over fire, place it on the ground to remove excess heat, scrape it thin with fingernails, and apply it to the swollen area. The swelling subsides the next day.
Another prescription (from *Pujiu*): Alum (Kufan), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), grind into powder and sprinkle onto the umbilicus.
