The Heart corresponds to the Gate of the Red Emperor, (associated with the Pericardium. Located at the zygomatic arch and cheeks.) The Liver corresponds to the Green Dragon Gate, (associated with the Gallbladder. Located at both eye orbits and the left Taiyang region.) The Spleen corresponds to the Yellow Center Gate, (associated with the Stomach. Located at both cheeks and lower jaw areas.) The Lungs correspond to the White肃 Gate, (Located at the forehead and right Taiyang region.) The Kidneys correspond to the Black Tortoise Gate, (Located at the mandible and earlobes.) The bilateral zygomatic arches serve as the pivot for the Heart,
the bilateral eye orbits serve as the pivot for the Liver, the bilateral cheeks and lower jaw areas serve as the pivot for the Spleen, the laryngeal prominence serves as the pivot for the Lungs, and the bilateral earlobes serve as the pivot for the Kidneys.
Qian (Heaven) and Dui (Lake) belong to Metal, representing the image of the Lungs. They are controlled by the Heart Fire of Li (Fire) in the South, and are generated by the Spleen Earth of Kun (Earth) and Gen (Mountain).
Kan (Water) belongs to Water, representing the image of the Kidneys. It is controlled by the Spleen Earth of Kun and Gen, and is generated by the Lung Metal of Qian and Dui.
Kun and Gen belong to Earth, representing the image of the Spleen. They are controlled by the Liver Wood of Zhen (Thunder) and Xun (Wind), and are generated by the Heart Fire of Li in the South.
Zhen and Xun belong to Wood, representing the image of the Liver. They are controlled by the Lung Metal of Qian and Dui, and are generated by the Kidney Water of Kan.
Li belongs to Fire, representing the image of the Heart. It is controlled by the Kidney Water of Kan, and is generated by the Liver Wood of Zhen and Xun.
Since Qian and Dui belong to Metal, Metal can control Wood. Since Wood is controlled, it becomes weak and cannot generate Fire; therefore, Metal is not controlled by it, which indicates a auspicious outcome based on this judgment. Both Zhen and Xun belong to Wood, so why is Xun heavy and Zhen light? This is because Xun is close to the Fire of Li. Fire generates Earth, and Earth controls Kidney Water, leading to the exhaustion of the Primordial Spirit (Yuan Shen); thus, appearing first in this region indicates an ominous sign. If the smallpox marks appear first in the Li Palace, then excessive Fire will inevitably harm Water. If it does not harm Water, the Fire will counter-attack and overwhelm, making it a critical condition. However, if the smallpox appears moist and spirited, it signifies the intersection of Water and Fire, turning an originally ominous sign into an auspicious one. If the Li Palace erupts first and the Kan Palace erupts later, but the lesions in the Kan Palace are glossy while those in the Li Palace are dull and dark, this indicates that the Heart Fire of the South is overcome and controlled by the Kidney Water in the center of Kan. Yet, without fire under the cauldron, how can the contents be cooked! Therefore, pus formation will fail, leading to death, which is considered ominous. The rest can be inferred by analogy. One should also consider the density and color of the lesions in each region to make a diagnosis, ensuring accuracy.
