For newborn infants with anal atresia (Gu Dao), there is a type where an internal membrane blocks the passage, preventing meconium discharge; if opened, the natural discharge of meconium allows survival.
There is another type where the anus has skin growth but no opening, which is critical; using a golden knife to incise it allows meconium discharge, and survival is possible. Early detection is essential for rescue; if delayed, presenting with chest and abdominal distension, cyanotic-white complexion, and inability to suck milk, it is incurable. (Added content)
Once, an infant had a septum inside the anus; when stools were loose, they did not cry, but when stools were dry, they cried out in pain, with a purple-swollen face, straining to pass stool as if split by a knife. At age three or four, a physician used a golden knife to cut open the septum, stopped bleeding with black medicine, and the infant recovered completely within a few days. (Added content.)
*Jianbian Fang* states: This is referred to as "Mwen Qi Sheng" (stifled umbilical birth), where a membrane covers the infant's anus at birth, blocking qi and preventing crying. Patting breaks the membrane, allowing crying. It is convenient to use a deft woman to gently puncture it with the foot of a silver hairpin. If puncturing is not possible, urgently wrap tightly in warm clothes to prevent heat loss, soak the placenta in hot water, and add fire heat in cold weather. After a while, internal heat pressure will naturally break the membrane, sound will emerge, and the infant will revive.
