Wang Kentang stated: Er Gen Du (Toxin at the Root of the Ear) occurs at the root of the ear, presenting as a nodule resembling a phlegm-nodule (Tan He). It is immobile upon pressure and slightly painful. It belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, caused jointly by Wind-Heat in the Sanjiao. (Zhun Sheng)
Hu Gongbi stated: Er Gen Du originates from the Heart and Kidney. Anger injures the Heart, causing stagnation in the Liver Meridian, which accumulates Wind-Heat. (Qing Nang)
Feng Luzhan stated: Swelling and pain in the root of the ear and gum bed belong to Upper Jiao Wind-Heat, involving the Yangming and Shaoyang meridians. One should use acrid-cool herbs to clear the Stomach and dissipate the pathogen; if excess heat is severe, Jiuzheng Dahuang (Wine-steamed Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) can be used to induce mild purgation. (Jin Nang)
Xin Fa stated: Er Gen Du grows in the crease posterior and superior to the earlobe.
