Before the abscess ulcerates, resolving toxicity is the priority; after the carbuncle or furuncle has ulcerated, tonifying healthy qi (Zheng Qi) is urgent. Even if residual toxins remain, there is no need to use herbs that attack and resolve toxicity. Herbs that attack toxicity are either cold-cooling in nature or consuming in effect. Consuming herbs damage the body's true qi (Zhen Qi), while cold-cooling herbs injure the stomach qi (Wei Qi). If stomach qi is injured, the essence from food and drink (Gu Qi) will be completely lost; if true qi is damaged, pathogenic factors will instead become vigorous. How can muscles then regenerate? This formula specifically assists true qi to benefit stomach qi, thus achieving complete efficacy. Moreover, this formula is not only suitable for treating ulcerated back carbuncles but also for any ulcerated sores or ulcers; it is a pity that people do not know this.)
Shen Douyuan stated: Upper Da, Middle Da, and Lower Da (types of back carbuncles) all result from excessive indulgence in alcohol and sexual activity, interference by anger, and accumulation of heat and cold. Scarcity of pus and blood indicates deficiency in the interior (Li Xu), making treatment difficult. (*Qi Xuan*)
Hu Gongbi stated: According to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, it begins at Jingming (BL1) and Cuanzhu (BL2), ends at Tonggu (BL67) and Zhiyin (BL67), comprising sixty-three acupoints. These points lie between one-and-a-half cun lateral to the midline of the spine, running close to the spine. From Dazhu (BL11) downward, the third thoracic vertebra corresponds to Feishu (BL13), the fifth to Xinshu (BL15), the seventh to Ganshu (BL18), the tenth to Danshu (GB19), the eleventh to Pishu (BL20), and the fourteenth to Shenshu (BL23). In cases of back carbuncles, upper onset injures the Lung, middle onset injures the Heart and Liver, named "Heart-Opposing Carbuncle" (Dui Xin Fa); lower onset injures the Spleen and Kidney, named "Umbilicus-Opposing Carbuncle" (Dui Qi Fa). Family secret method states: On the first day of a back carbuncle, it appears; on the second day, it enlarges; on the third day, it ulcerates; within one week, it discharges fluid. If a skilled physician is not encountered within one week, it will spread open four...
