Tongue swelling with saliva discharge, preventing the intake of water and food. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Xuanjing Shi (Nephrite Stone) (2 liang), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (each 1 fen).
Grind into powder. Prick the tongue with a needle to remove blood, rinse with salt water, sprinkle the powder on the lesion, and swallow the saliva. The effect is miraculous.
For Chong She (Double Tongue), Mu She (Wooden Tongue), Zi She (Purple Tongue):
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Bohe (Herba Menthae) (each 1 qian), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) (1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (5 fen).
Add ten stalks of Dengxin Cao (Medulla Junci) and decoct for oral administration.
Danggui Lianqiao Tang (Angelica Tail and Forsythia Decoction): Treats Chong She (Double Tongue) and Mu She (Wooden Tongue) caused by heat in the Heart and Spleen.
Danggui Wei (Tail of Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) (each 3 qian), Chuan Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) (2 qian), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Xiaodu Xijiao Yin (Detoxifying Rhinoceros Horn Drink): Treats internal accumulation of pathogenic heat, obstruction in the throat and diaphragm, presenting as Chong She (Double Tongue) or Mu She (Wooden Tongue), and all types of heat toxins.
Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) (lightly stir-fried, 4 qian), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis) (each 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Chen Shigong stated: Mu She (Wooden Tongue) and Zi She (Purple Tongue) also arise from Heart Fire. Apply Feiyan (Sublimed Salt) mixed with a small amount of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) frequently; once saliva discharges, it will heal itself. (From *Waike Zhengzong*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Mu She (Wooden Tongue) results from congestion and heat in the zang-fu organs, with accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen causing Qi to rush upward. Consequently, the tongue swells, the tip becomes large, and it fills the mouth. If not treated urgently, it can be fatal. One must not press it with hands, as this damages the root of the tongue, leading to speech impediments later. If the patient reaches a state of silent crying, frequent changes in facial expression, and惊痛 (frightful pain), it is incurable. Although the tongue belongs to the Heart and Spleen, the Liver meridian also connects to the root of the tongue. Thus, when Shaoyin cold damage pathogens transmit to the Jueyin meridian, tongue retraction and testicular contraction occur, which illustrates this point. (From *Jinnang*)
Zhang Xianbo stated: When the tongue suddenly swells, becomes hard and swollen, filling the mouth, and breath ceases immediately, it is called Mu She (Wooden Tongue). (From *Xianchao*)
Dou Hanqing stated: In Mu She (Wooden Tongue), the condition is hard like pangolin scales, and the visible tongue resembles a clenched fist. External signs include aversion to cold with high fever, and slurred speech. This indicates heat in the Heart Meridian. The Heart is the root of the tongue; disease arises from the Heart. The treatment method involves pricking purple-black areas with a small knife and adding Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) to the decoction, as Shanzhi is a key herb for purging fire. (From *Quan Shu*)
He also stated: Mu She (Wooden Tongue) and Ru E (Goat's Throat/Tonsillitis) are caused by heat-toxin in the Heart Meridian, or by lying in warm beds and thick quilts after drinking alcohol, causing heat to attack the Heart Meridian. This leads to unilateral Ru E and tongue swelling turning purple, with wind-phlegm being spat out. Urgently prick the Jinjin (Metal Fluid) and Yuye (Jade Liquid) acupoints under the tongue with a three-edged needle, and puncture the Ru E, ensuring blood and phlegm are discharged. Immediately blow Danxiao Dan (Gallbladder Nitre Powder) into the throat, and subsequently administer Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction to Overcome Toxins).
He also stated: A woman suffered from Mu She (Wooden Tongue) filling her mouth, with no effect from various medicines. After using bian needles (stone needles) for bloodletting five or seven times, the swelling subsided, and she recovered fully in three days, with a large volume of blood discharged. Medication followed the previous prescription.
He also stated: If there is white coating on the tongue that is hard and crusted, it will inevitably develop into Mu She (Wooden Tongue). Treat with the aforementioned methods.
He also stated: Whenever tongue conditions present with hard white coating preventing the entry of medicinal taste, wipe clean first, scrape the tongue with a bamboo knife, and then apply medication.
He also stated: Tongue retraction and swelling preventing swallowing are all due to heat-toxin rushing upward. Urgently apply Zixue (Purple Snow) mixed with Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Shexiang (Moschus) to the tongue, and follow with blowing Bingpian San (Borneol Powder).
Wang Shengzhi stated: Tongue swelling with purple color resembling liver tissue is called Zi She (Purple Tongue). Whenever the tongue moves stiffly and feels numb, it is called Mu She (Wooden Tongue); this arises from Heart Fire. (From *Lili*)
Kui Guang stated: Mu She (Wooden Tongue) presents as the tongue swelling as large as a cooked pig liver, unable to move. Another type involves swelling under the root of the tongue, shaped like a white date, with green-purple veins, which does not heal quickly. Initially, there is no pain or aversion to cold/fever; it gradually swells. Prompt treatment leads to recovery; delay makes it difficult to cure. All cases are caused by depression.
He also stated: In treating mouth and tongue disorders, if after blowing medicine there is no saliva on the tongue, or if it appears dry like an orange pit, it is incurable.
He also stated: Whenever mouth and tongue ulceration occurs without bleeding, it is incurable.
He also stated: For general tongue swelling, apply raw Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) mixed with Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum). If bleeding is present, use roasted Shigao.
He also stated: When the tongue is swollen, filling the mouth, and protruding outward, making it difficult to administer oral medication, use Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) and Yazao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) processed into fine powder. Blow a small amount into the nose; the mouth will open naturally, and phlegm-saliva will discharge. Use chopsticks wrapped with silk cotton dipped in Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) to moisten the tongue. Frequently blow Siwei Kougan Yao (Four-Ingredient Mouth Ulcer Medicine) with added Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum).
He also stated: For Mu She (Wooden Tongue), initially use Jindan (Golden Pill) and Bidan (Green Pill) together (formula recorded in the Throat Gate section); later, use Jindan (Golden Pill) alone internally along with decoctions.
Zhang Zhongjing stated: Tongue swelling caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage) is difficult to treat.
Luo Qian'an stated: Tongue swelling resembling wood is called Mu She (Wooden Tongue), caused by excess Wind-Heat. Yan Shou Dan (Longevity Pill) is appropriate.
