Facial Bagua Diagram
By observing the eight palaces of the face, one can ascertain the distribution of variola (smallpox) lesions on the body, chest, back, and limbs: where they are dense, where they are sparse, where itching and collapse are inevitable, and where pustular carbuncles will appear.
This miraculous method should be carefully memorized.
The verse states:
The Qian Palace belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian; density is borne by the back; frequent itching and collapse at the anus; Baoyuan Tang (Preserve Origin Decoction) is suitable.
The Kan Palace belongs to Kidney Water; dense lesions with carbuncles arising in the yin region; the Shenshu acupoint feels like burning fire; death occurs at Zi hour on the seventh day.
The Gen Palace belongs to the Stomach Meridian; plum-blossom patterns are extremely inhumane (ominous); if accompanied by purple-black color, death occurs at Yin hour on the eighth day.
The Zhen Palace belongs to the Liver; dispersion is preferred over clustering; if arranged like the character "Pin" or in strings, death occurs at Wu hour on the fourteenth day.
The Xun Palace belongs to the Small Intestine; sparsity with a yellowish hue is favorable; if plum-blossom shaped and red, dysuria and retention are not detrimental to prognosis.
The Li Palace belongs to Heart Fire; ant-like shapes are very dangerous; no room for acupuncture on the limbs; the whole body is chaotic and indistinguishable.
The Kun Palace belongs to the Mingmen (Gate of Life); life and death reside within it; density is ultimately unfavorable; sparsity and clarity absolutely indicate no凶险 (danger).
The Dui Palace belongs to Lung Metal; even if numerous, there is no need for alarm; if there is no empty space (lesions merge), the chest and back lesions influence each other.
The Central Wu-Ji Earth; density causes suffering in both legs; if the lesions collapse, the feet dance like lotus flowers (indicating convulsions).
When Qian and Dui Palaces belong to Metal, if a single mature lesion appears, and the red lesion belongs to Fire, Fire overcoming Metal leads to death on Bing-Shen or Ding-You days.
When Kan Palace belongs to Water, if a single scorched-yellow lesion appears, and the soybean-colored lesion belongs to Earth, Earth overcoming Water leads to death on Wu-Zi or Ji-Hai days.
When Gen and Kun Palaces belong to Earth, if a single green lesion appears, and the green lesion belongs to Wood, Wood overcoming Earth leads to death on Jia-Xu, Jia-Chen, Yi-Wei, or Yi-Chou days.
When Zhen and Xun Palaces belong to Wood, if a single white lesion appears, and the white lesion belongs to Metal, Metal overcoming Wood leads to death on Geng-Yin or Xin-Mao days.
When Li Palace belongs to Fire, if a single black lesion appears, and the black lesion belongs to Water, Water overcoming Fire leads to death on Ren-Wu or Gui-Si days.
Variola appearing in Qian and Kan Palaces is most auspicious; only a few grains on the head and face, while the limbs are sparse (sparse means few). Such variola reaches full pus formation on the ninth day and concludes its course on the twelfth day, requiring no worry.
Variola appearing in Gen and Zhen Palaces is indeed ominous; the limbs and face suffer the most. If the chest and back are evenly distributed with several black lesions, urgent needle puncture still yields merit.
Variola appearing in Xun and Kun Palaces has grains connecting to the limbs (three grains connected); such variola lacks distinction between Yin and Yang (grains are indistinct); the eighth day is highly ominous, saving only one out of ten; delaying beyond one day renders efforts futile.
Variola appearing in Li and Dui Palaces resembles silkworms in seed; purple-black and scorched dots resemble...; madness arises on the sixth day, itching on the seventh; returning to the Spring Homeland (death) at Wu hour on the eighth day (difficult to survive past the eighth day).
